I think in U.S. Army, 4 star = just General and 5 star = General of The Armys.

Fascinating stuff. What about "Private" "Corporal" Sergeant" "Petty Officer" etc.?

What about in other cultures? Say for example Japan? Did they just adopt Europeanized terminology during teh Meiji period or what? The whole issue of 'status' and 'rank' is an interesting one to me :)

@Japan: I think I _might_ see your point, but somehow you always manage to express it in a way that does frankly come off as trolling *sigh*

The IJN and the IJA had similar ranks during the war, i.e. "Navy General"...

I do not know. I am interested in this etomology and asked my friend and post what he sends me. I know private is for a private soldier and a serjent is a medieval word for a man who could be knight but is not knighted.

And my friend says corporal is latin/Italian for a chief like a capo, I am sorry I am just a writer. You must ask my friend.

cakammp is entirely correct.

There's a great website that explains the origins of all the rank titles, at least for the English speaking countries (US and Commonwealth).  Their origins are actually pretty logical, when put in historical context.  For example, at one time, (and to over simplify) there were simply colonels and generals.  Then someone came up with the bright idea of a higher ranking general as army organizations became more complex, so the higest rank became "major" general.  Indeed in the US Army that was the highest rank for many, many years.  When the rank structure took another leap upward to full general, a rank in between was eventually created that was called lieutenant general, like lieutenant colonel.  So, it was a lieutenant to the full general.  Unfortunately, this put lieutenant general above major general in rank.  Odd, but true.  It's an interesting etymological juxtaposition.  (Sorry guys.  I couldn't resist.)

I'd post the link, but I can't find it right now.  I've have it bookmarked somewhere, but when you have 10,521 bookmarks .....  [8|]  Actually, I think it's on my work computer.  (It's great being an academic which gives me the ability to screw off a lot at work.)
I found it through Yahoo or Goggle, so if you care, hunt it down.
