AGCs and Amphib HQs

Post by RUPD3658 »

Do empty AGCs give any bonus during landings or do they have to have an amphib HQ aboard? I currently have 3 AGCs but only 1 Amphin HQ.

The HQ has to be embarked to give the invasion any kind of bonus; the ship itself doesn't do anything for you.

It must be an Amphib Force HQ, not an Amphib Corps HQ, to receive the bonus.

How do you identify them?

Does the ACG have to be in the unloading TF or just in the same hex to provide it's bonus?

No.  The TF with the Amphib Force HQ needs to be in a separate TF and set to "do not unload".  You TF w/ HQ should be in the same hex as as the invading TF, but it's a separate TF that shouldn't unload.

AGCs will NOT load Amphib Corps HQs.  Each AGC will load one Amphib Force HQ, and it will load the entire HQ, even if it goes over capacity.  So (at least in CHS), the AGC has 2000 capacity, but the Amphib Force HQs have something like 3600 load, so the AGC ends up at 140% capacity or whatever.  Note that you can't load an Amphib Force HQ onto two AGCs (so don't let your AGC go down, or there goes your Amphib Force HQ as well!).

Add a MSW or two, and ASW escort or two, to your Amphib HQ TF.  It would kinda suck to have your AGC hit mines or get torp'd.

the probability in the game to hit a mine is higher if you have a couple of MSW in this TF as the MSW automatically always get drawn into the minefield. Without the MSW probably nothing happens. You definetely need a good ASW escort though.

I have learned (the hard way) to never put MSW in a invasion TF. DDs and DEs work better for clearing mines while the TF is unloading troops. I end up losing every MSW in the invasion TF on the first turn. Also, never send a MSW TF to clear the mines before the CD units are eliminated. Even trying to sweep mines from an adjacent hex will result in the CDs sinking all of the MSW. MSW are better used to clear the mines AFTER the island/base is taken.

saying that from my experience though, not because of knowledge of the code. If you have lots of MSW in your invasion then you´re just fine, no need to include MSW with your AGC also.

Do the Amphib Force HQ function as Infantry HQs once unloaded or do they only improve landiongs?

They do help make up support deficit for purposes of disablement/fatigue/morale recovery, similar to Air and Fleet HQs; if that's what you mean.

their planning for a base does not help in its defence or offensive though, right?
