Japan Ambassador Apologizes for Bataan Death March

Post by Mark Carver »

64 (after Japan surrendered) years later... too late if you ask me.
SAN ANTONIO — Japan's ambassador to the United States apologized Saturday on behalf of his country for the 65-mile forced walk of U.S. troops and allies during World War II that left some 11,000 prisoners of war dead.

"As former prime ministers of Japan have repeatedly stated: The Japanese people should bear in mind that we must look into the past and to learn from the lessons of history," Ichiro Fujisaki said at the American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor, the San Antonio Express-News reported.

He said his country was extending a heartfelt apology for "having caused tremendous damage and suffering to many people, including prisoners of war, those who have undergone tragic experiences."

Although Fujisaki received a standing ovation from about half of the 400 to 500 attendees, others said the apology was overdue and didn't seem sincere.

Former POW Hershel C. Boushey told the ambassador that he did not accept "your apology," and that the atrocities and mistreatment many suffered was severe.

In 1942, Japanese captors marched about 78,000 prisoners of war — 12,000 Americans and 66,000 Filipinos — for six days on the Philippine island of Luzon to a prisoner-of-war camp in what became known as the Bataan Death March. Many prisoners were denied food, water or medical care, and some were stabbed or beheaded.

As many as 11,000 prisoners died, according to the U.S. Air Force.

To be quite frank, it's attitudes like that that keep things festering. The effort has been made. Good on him. Now, if only some others could follow suit [:'(]

"'The Japanese people should bear in mind that we must look into the past and to learn from the lessons of history' -- Ichiro Fujisaki said"

How funny... kafkaesque and machiavellian. From this part we could deduce that the "Japanese people" are the problem. In other words, if there is revisionism it's their fault.

The only little problem is that they are not the root of the problem. Mr Ichiro & Co. are the real problem. The Japanese government decides what the kids swallow in school. Since 1945 they gave them poison (aka revisionism) = they are fabricating revisionists ON PURPOSE! No rocket science, Mr Ichiro! Stop feeding them with that poison. End of the problem.

It's your responsability, don't accuse the anonymous Japanese mass: many of them perhaps don't even know what the Bataan Death March is. And above all, they are not the ones who decide what the kids will be told. They are not moulding their little brains... You are a member of that sinister gang [8D]

Denazification anyone? It worked in Germany. Perhaps it will work in Japan... 70 years later? [:D]

What an effort...

Perhaps they could own up to the other 100 plus attrocities now? And maybe add them into their histories? The last time I went to Japan, the war college had a nice big photo of General Tanaka (of Hong Kong fame) up for all to see. Not to mention the "commemorative" Locomotive that was the first to run on the Burma railway, without any mention of the deaths involved on that lovely railroad. I could mention other similar incidents that made me sick, but I don't want this turning into a fracas thread. Needless to say, I will never be going there for a holiday.

Japan has not deployed combat troops overseas in 60 years. Meanwhile the United States has military personnel in over 80 nations and has been involved in a major combat operation for every decade since the 40s.

So who really needs to learn the lessons of peace?
