RE: it goes on...
Ah, this is most refreshing to see. Good job of taking the fight to the Allies, just what I had in mind for my little war. Nice reading, I'll keep my eyes on this one [;)]

Sure he aint using patrol planes or heavy bombers for this?
If you are sure it is the bug being used, are you going to ask him about it?

You can´t place patrols inland and Alice Springs is the only place in "range" of any aircraft of the Allied. And you can´t use bombers (B-24 would have the range from Alice Springs) to transport troops, you could use them for supply runs. So if they are not dying by starvation, well there´s only this "feature" I mentioned left... [8|]
I usually don´t want to ask an opponent if he´s using an exploit because if he does, he obviously thinks it would be ok. And in this case it´s just not important enough for me to start a fight. The more troops he flies out with this "feature" the sooner he will lose Wyndham. He loses Wyndham, I have 5000 av ready to move onto the next target and that´s quite a nice situation given the date of this campaign.
I´ve mentioned in an email the use of his barges that were spotted by my subs and the obviously turned back to Perth as it seems Paul has accepted my thought of it being strange to use barges for a 45 hex supply move. 10-15 hexes ok if there´s fuel at the destination but not a nearly 100 hex move to and from the destination.

RE: it goes on...
I couldn´t resist and have asked Miller if he also knows about the "workaround" how to pick up troops that are actually out of range of your ac and he replied that he was very disappointed that I would think that he cheats. [:(] Well, he shouldn´t be disappointed because the more troops he flies out, the better for me.
But what really surprised me is the fact that he told me that he´s using C-46 to fly out troops and they have enough range. [8|] I don´t know if he really thinks they have enough range or if he thinks I wouldn´t know their range. The C-46 has a huge cargo capacity (15.000) but not more than 9 hexes range in Nikmod. Well, Wyndham is 14 hexes away. [:D] Which makes it pretty obvious that he uses the workaraound, feature, bug, glitch or however you want to call it.

RE: it goes on...
Planes may land, refuel and then fly back with the troops. It doesnÄt matter in witp, whether a plane makes paradrops or can land and refuel. So if you want, it isn't bugusing or cheating - it only reflects the real possibility of refueling at an airport... [;)]
Moreover: You have fighters, why don't you simple LR-CAP the base? He'll loose a lot of planes WITH their load and your pilots get a free live training without any serious danger.
There's no easier way to create aces!

am I totally nuts? [8|] god damn what´s going on with this sh*tty ground combat routine. Don´t know how often I have attacked here with hundreds of combat engineers and it´s not possible to take down the forts and the super duper Allied mega engineers build up the forts from a Maginot line into a super Maginot line within two weeks... Losses stay insane, that the enemy is out of supply doesn´t matter at all it seems... The real idiocy isn´t the fact that the enemy still has a higher adjusted av than base av, the idiocy is the fact that we still get our av divided by 3 even though we meet ALL requirements. Suppyl, HQ, prep... etc. etc.
At 1/1/43 everything Allied is hardcodedly turning into super duper it seems... the way this battle has been going on for months makes you want to belive that the Nazis are still holding on Stalingrad nowadays... [8|]

am I totally nuts?

RE: it goes on...
ORIGINAL: Historiker
Planes may land, refuel and then fly back with the troops. It doesnÄt matter in witp, whether a plane makes paradrops or can land and refuel. So if you want, it isn't bugusing or cheating - it only reflects the real possibility of refueling at an airport... [;)]
Moreover: You have fighters, why don't you simple LR-CAP the base? He'll loose a lot of planes WITH their load and your pilots get a free live training without any serious danger.
There's no easier way to create aces!
lol, why did I 100% know that exactly such a statement would come up? [;)]
so my answer... there´s a lot in WITP that is so super abstract but why shouldn´t the same thing be valid for bombers then? Or fighters? Why can´t my Kates fly a torpedo out 8 hexes and land two hexes further East at a friendly base instead of returning? Why can´t Allied 4Es fly from Iwo to Tokyo and land at Vladivostok? All possible in real life... this bug has been around forever already and it´s a non working programme, not the abstraction of real life.
But hey, why not going with the abstraction of real life. There is no supply at Wyndham and supply is abstracted for everything. Food, fuel, ammo, etc. So if the enemy is starving then there´s not enough supply to even keep his units intact. But there´s still fuel for aircraft. Very abstract, because no supply, no aircraft fuel.
LRCAP? lol! From where should I fly LRCAP? From Darwin? I don´t know how much experience you really have with flying LRCAP but it´s definetely not enough to know how much op losses I would take for no gain as we would damage a dozen transports while taking only one or two down for the loss of up to a dozen high exp Zero pilots. LRCAP 7 hexes is just a wast of your ac and pilots, it´s definetely nothing to creat aces. Perhaps that works in stock but stock... well...
As it is in this game, aircraft have a certain range, if this range is correct or not is usually a long discussion on the forum. If a base is within range than you can use your ac to attack it, fly in supply, fly in troops. If it is out of range, you can´t do that. Wyndham is 14 hexes from Alice Springs and the C-46 has a range of 9. What more can I say? No matter if we try to abstract the possibility of Aliens coming from the Venus to relieve Adolf Hitler in Berlin 45, if the game was programmed differently than it´s just not working. In this case, it´s a not working game routine (for ages already) and not the abstraction of something.

DMS Chandler, Shell hits 14, on fire, heavy damage
It´s like I´ve expected, the ongoing bomber attacks on Canton Island were the preparation for an invasion. Boy, invading Canton Island? That´s one of the targets I really don´t care and I have no idea why Miller attacks Canton... two of the DMS were hit hard, they are either part of a bombardment TF or are sent in before the BBs arrive... in any case not really a good idea. Two are hit hard but none is reported sunk... [:(]

the invasion goes in, the TFs are reported as huge... looks like Miller finally figuered out how to assault an atoll... as you can see, the Japanese mines have no effect on Allied ships, just like handgrenades... lol, there are 150.000 Allied troops trapped at Wyndham and another 70.000 are struggling to hold the area around Townsville and Cairns and Miller goes in to attack a uselss atoll far off from important areas with nearly 80.000 combat troops? looks like I really can´t do anything to defend my bases anymore. People consider putting 25.000 troops on an atoll total overkill in the game but when I look at my ajdusted av (and compare it with the adjusted av of out of supply troops at Wyndham) then I´m more than shocked. Been a long time since I´ve seen an atoll fall as easy as Canton will fall... the attack on the first day already makes sure that the atoll will fall either on day two or three. We lose more troops than the attack and we are sitting behind level 9 forts, fully prepped, fully supplied and the inf untis were 0 disrupted (bombardments don´t touch inf units at all)... boy, damn die rolls...

lol, there are 150.000 Allied troops trapped at Wyndham and another 70.000 are struggling to hold the area around Townsville and Cairns and Miller goes in to attack a uselss atoll far off from important areas with nearly 80.000 combat troops? RE: it goes on...
Here´s what Miller has landed on Canton. I have to say I was surprised to see four US divisions. I knew there are lots of RCTs around but seeing four 100% combat ready US divs was a surprise. But as mentioned above, I really am amazed and wonder why Miller took Canton as a target... what does he gain other than wearing down his troops, even though if he will take the atoll easily? It would have taken him only something like two weeks more and he could have moved those troops into the Townsville area. In fact, they could have been there for a long time already I guess. I have to ask the same question as I´ve asked during his attack on PM, why is he trying to do an offensive if he has 150.000 troops trapped at Wyndham? Shouldn´t it be his number one priority to relieve those troops at Wyndham? This especially if he has to notice that his troops there really seem to be super tough and hold out amazingly long, even though while being out of supply. No, first he attacks PM with US divs that were down to 60% strenght and without any carrier support, resulting in his troops being even more worn down and the loss of a couple of light cruisers and 5 dozen APs! And now he attacks Canton Island! Why? And also in this attack, it seems there is no carrier support around. The small TBF attack on Canton seems to have come from CVEs or CVLs. But my bombers didn´t attack today, so not having carriers wasn´t that severe it seems.
Still, I really don´t understand my opponent´s strategic decisions at all. Not that it wouldn´t be good for me, but honestly am I totally wrong in saying that this doesn´t make sense? Perhaps I am and it´s a perfect strategy, I just don´t get it to attck exactly that base that is the furthest away from any important area.

RE: it goes on...
any chance, that the mighty KB sails to canton and doing what japanese mines can not do? sinking allied shipping.
you have already sunk a good part of the allied transport fleet. with so many troops at canton, miller must have a huge part of his remaining transport capacity there. any chance that the KB can reach the area before the allied troops take canton? with so many allied Cv sunk or damaged, i dont think that your carriers would face any serious resistance and sinking another 40-50 allied Ak/AP would buy you even more time, "chris san".

if I look on the landings yesterday then in total the Allied units suffered quite some disablements and due to the fact that they didn´t unload in one turn we would have had a nice chance to inflict some more casualties if our adjusted av wouldn´t have been that bad and if the Allied attack wouldn´t have been that devastating to our troops sitting behind forts like this on an atoll... I know, level 9 forts are total phantasy but it´s the same as having 110.000 troops in total from both sides on this small spot... a 0:1 yesterday and another shock attack today would have made my day...

and that´s it for today... if you don´t have carriers around that launch massive strikes then hurting an invasion with land based bombers only is near impossible if there isn´t one fat target like a couple of CVs or BBs that get attacked by massive strikes.

what can I say... if you think about the fact that I had nearly 500 av behind level 9 forts, massive supply and probably 7 or 8 dozen CD guns than it was just like a cakewalk for the Allied... I have seen 500 av beating up bigger invasions than this one before so the die rolls must have been pretty much one sided. Everything was done after the first shock attack... we lose an unimportant atoll 5000 miles away from the real important areas... I´m not happy with the damage we´ve inflicted though...

and that´s it for today... if you don´t have carriers around that launch massive strikes then hurting an invasion with land based bombers only is near impossible if there isn´t one fat target like a couple of CVs or BBs that get attacked by massive strikes.

what can I say... if you think about the fact that I had nearly 500 av behind level 9 forts, massive supply and probably 7 or 8 dozen CD guns than it was just like a cakewalk for the Allied... I have seen 500 av beating up bigger invasions than this one before so the die rolls must have been pretty much one sided. Everything was done after the first shock attack... we lose an unimportant atoll 5000 miles away from the real important areas... I´m not happy with the damage we´ve inflicted though...

any chance, that the mighty KB sails to canton and doing what japanese mines can not do? sinking allied shipping.
you have already sunk a good part of the allied transport fleet. with so many troops at canton, miller must have a huge part of his remaining transport capacity there. any chance that the KB can reach the area before the allied troops take canton? with so many allied Cv sunk or damaged, i dont think that your carriers would face any serious resistance and sinking another 40-50 allied Ak/AP would buy you even more time, "chris san".
KB was/is in the area around Truk as this is an area of more importance. Bringing it down to Canton would have taken too long, even if I would have decided to send it out three or four days ago. And as you know, fuel is in very short supply so a full speed run could mean I would use up more fuel than I can store in a month.
Canton was lost on the first day of the Allied attack as it was devastating. All the CD guns, forts, preparation and supply helped just nothing. When looking at what we´ve spotted in the combat report and the replay, then I guess there is not much in terms of APs around Canton, guess the PM invasion really took a toll on the Allied APs. From what it looks like, in the Canton Island invasion, there were mostly AKs, backed up with LSTs. And AKs should still be hundreds around, while APs are only some 5 or 6 dozens left. Rough guess, could be more, doubt it could be fewer.
RE: it goes on...
thats something i find very stuppid in this game..this allied invasion fleets with "warp engine". now, the japanese have the best long range recon planes of the war but most of the time, they spot a allied landing fleet when its just 1-2 hexes away from the destination. the same happend to me in my game vs. garry...his invasion forces popped up right 1 hex away from baker island although nearly 40 emilys were flying naval search in the area.
you have little to no time to react as the japanese player.

that´s how it is, but IMO it´s one of the things that isn´t reall off. I even think we spot more than in real life. I had 4 chutais (36 ac) of Emilies on Baker Island set to 18 hexes nav search. Well, if you think about the area they have to cover when a hex is 60 miles big and you sent them out in a circle with 360° then that´s quite a lot of ocean... I have spotted the enemy one day before the invasion has gone in, but not the whole fleet. That´s the only thing that seems a bit strange to me. We spotted two TFs of a couple of ships each, while there were probably a dozen with big surface combat TFs and amphibious TFs of probably 100 ships each.
I had no Alfs or Jakes on Canton as they would have just been bombed by the Allied 4Es. If you have a daitai of Alfs or Jakes on an island you usually sight such big armadas coming in as soon as they are in range, means at 6 or 7 hexes.
And there´s no difference between Allied or Japanese nav search. At least none I have experienced or heard of.
RE: it goes on...
from what i heard about AE, you can define the sector of naval search operation. it means, you dont need to do a 360 degree search from lets say tawara. you can concentrate all search planes into E-NE-SE. maybe that increases the chances to spot enemy TFs earlier.

the six MSW and the bigger TF that was going to PM have been sighted yesterday heading back to Aussie land again, so I´ve moved in 54 torp bombers to Gili Gili, hoping to get a shot at the bigger TF with AKs in (hopefully uncapped). wow... [X(] after seeing the Barracudas from PM being set on nav/airfield attack daily, coming in with a more or less "weak" (in numbers) Thunderbolt escort I decided that it is time to intervene.
This had two reasons:
a) I wanted to know if the Tony really performs better than the Tojo, so I´ve thought setting 250 Tonies from Rabaul to LRCAP Gasmata would be a good idea to test them against an escort of 25 or so Thunderbolts. Well, needless to say that I was shocked to see an escort of 94!!! Thunderbolts. One of the idiotic "features" of the game. No matter how many fighters you set on escort, if there is no Cap at the target, the game decides how many really fly and that can be FAR less. As soon as there is Cap over the target, usuall ALL fighters set to escort actually fly. So this meant in this case that (probably) 4 squadrons of Thunderbolts were set to escort and 94 actually flew (out of 96). We were coming in at 20.000ft, the enemy fighters at 13.000ft. Do you think we would have bounced them? No... We only engaged them but in no time the Tony really proved to be a far better dogfighter than the totally obsolete Tojo (in Nikmod). One Thunderbolt after another was shot down in no time, the better maneuver rating of the Tony (compared to the Tojo) enabled us to fire from behind at the Thuds and with the higher gun value of 10, many of the bursts actually resulted in kills. If the game wouldn´t have gone crazy at some point, ignoring physics completely, then we would have achieved an insane kill rate I guess. BUT, at some point we just got into 7 or 8 phases when the enemy fighters were bouncing us. How that is possible when my fighters come in 7.000 ft higher than the enemy escorts is beyond me but that´s how the game works. 20 or so of the kills were achieved during the Allied bounce phases.
b) if my new fighters prove to be competitive then this will keep the enemy honest as he then can´t just attack everything he wants. I won´t end up in 5 hexes range of enemy bases with my airforce as this would just draw me into an attrition war against Corsairs, Spits, Warhawks, etc. but everything that is 6 or more hexes away from an Allied base can be defended if we wish to as we surely can go into an attrition war against the Thunderbolt and the Lightning as long as the enemy only gets 30 or 35 of each every month. This could change when the enemy will get 75 P38-J each month.
The Tonies even managed to fight their way through to the bombers and took 20 of them down. I guess this also hurts because those higher exp British pilots will be replaced by "green" pilots in the mid 50s. At least I guess they had quite a nice exp due to their excellent performanc when they attacked my shipping. One of our Tony sentais was hit hard, losing 8 high exp pilots and will be flown out for training, the sentai can immedietely be replaced with a new one that has finished training. In total we´ve lost 13 pilots which means that really a lot survived today, either going down over Gasmata or crashing back at Rabaul. This attack really is a morale boost for me as it shows me that if we continue to try to hurt the enemy, with max efforts we can still do that. Setting 7 high exp Tony sentais (some 250 fighters) on LRCAP is definetely a max effort. The enemy nearly lost a two month replacement rate of Thunderbolts and that´s surely not nice, also in this case, the pilots will probably replaced with new ones that are less experienced. Really a nice engagment, I don´t want to think about how it could have looked like if the enemy wouldn´t have got the bounce (over our base, 360 miles away from friendly territory and when flying 7.000ft below us), or if we would have won the jackpot of bouncing the enemy. All in all, an absolutely succesful day. [:D]

will order the first deliberate attack soon and I guess I will be shocked about the losses we will take. With 2600+ av behind surely level 9 forts and with unlimited supply I´m not sure that we will ever be able to take the base as our losses will be over 10.000 every time we attack and if (BIG IF) we are able to take down a fort, then the super duper Allied we build forts in no time engineers will bring it back to level 9 before we can take it down to level 7. Our only plus here are our tanks, I hope they can hurt the enemy.

more than half of our remaining units were wiped out... this is the third day of the invasion. We not just lost the base, we are wiped out within one week at max. And now the idiotic thing of the day: we moved out fragments of all units, ALL of them either vanished or turned into ghosts... AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! [:@][:@][:@][:@] I have the strange feeling that as soon as you have your first ghost unit somewhere it is not possible for you to rebuild ANY of your fragments anymore. And this just sucks. Why? Because when I look at the Russian divisions that had fragments flown out from Borzya, at least 5 of them are rebuilding at Irkutsk now. And their av is going up, as I can see during the replay of my bombardments... thanks a lot... [:@][:@][:@] So I can´t rebuild my units... what does that mean? This means that I will run out of base forces as soon as the enemy arrives in the area Saipan or further into the SRA. In this case I have not just lost a big base force, but also two smaller ones and a full CD unit. Well done... Running out of base forces means running out of bases where I can park aircraft. I get something like three dozen small base forces from now on until the end of the war, means something like 1000 air support, enough to stack 250 ac into four bases. That´s great. None of the base forces I will get will be one of the bigger ones with lots of AA and CD guns and 140 air support.
Sorry, but this game is so borked it just sucks. At the moment I have surely something like two dozen ghost units on the map. Just a prove of very poor data base programming... once again...[>:]

the six MSW and the bigger TF that was going to PM have been sighted yesterday heading back to Aussie land again, so I´ve moved in 54 torp bombers to Gili Gili, hoping to get a shot at the bigger TF with AKs in (hopefully uncapped). Well, we didn´t attack the bigger TF and launched one strike on the MSW, killing four of them... the bombers were sent back out of range of the 4Es at Cooktown...

Just a prove of very poor data base programming... once again...[>:]

from what i heard about AE, you can define the sector of naval search operation. it means, you dont need to do a 360 degree search from lets say tawara. you can concentrate all search planes into E-NE-SE. maybe that increases the chances to spot enemy TFs earlier.
it surely will be an improvement...

How many Tony's do you produce per month?

ramped up the production to something like 630. I´m producing something like 1000 fighters of three different types at the moment. Tony, A6M3a and OscarII.
