Almost Unusable Artillery Dialog

Almost Unusable Artillery Dialog

Post by lparkh »

A known problem as I understand it is that fast cpu's can make the artillery dialog almost unusable in that mouse clicks are ignored for the most part. On my older machine I overcame this by clicking repeatedly fast. Unfortunately on my newer faster machine this is no longer viable. Just too frustrating (takes forever to get click to register). I don't think there is any preference that fixes this right? So my question is that I think there might be a utility that could slow the game or my cpu down such that I could get the game to respond reasonably in the artillery dialog.
I just spent $$ on the general's edition and am trying to do Lost Victories. Really need my artillery :-)!
Thanks

Hi there.

Don't know for sure if it'll fix your problem but it certainly had resolved all the mouse issues I encountered with SP 3 so you might consider downloading and giving a shot at this great utility : http://tinyurl.com/n6yffw

It's called MouseCTL.com and you have to copy it in your SP dir then add these lines to the .BAT file used to load SPWaW :
- loadhigh c:\local\dos\mousectl 5,6,10,15,15,15,15,15

It controls the speed and accelerations of the mouse cursor so you can try and experiment different variations.

P.S : the TinyURL is a convenient way to share some lengthy URL but if you prefer, I can e-mail you the file (only 3Ko). Maybe it's still possible to find the genuine one on-line but you'll have to search for it as I'm unable to remember where I originally found it [8|]

Sorry, I forgot to add that you MUST replace the syntax : "c:\local\dos" with the actual path used to access to your SPWaW directory ! Unless you prefer to create a DOS dir and copy MouseCTL files to it, then add the path to your Windows files [8D]

You're welcome. I hope it'll do the trick but I'm pretty confident about that. In any cases, it worked great on my computer and solved my problems with SP3, when the mouse cursor was impossible to use.

In any cases, please let us know about your experience and take a moment to report here about it. Maybe it'll be of some help for others ?

Just in case MousCTL wouldn't work, you can also try to effectively slow your CPU down by using one of these utilities (I bet some other similar softwares may exist) :

- Moslo.
- Slowdown.

Each one works differently and sometimes, one proved as being more effective than the other, depending on which game was involved. As a matter of fact, I can provide copies of each soft (maybe not the latest versions though) in case you couldn't find them on-line [:)] I never tested them with a multi-core processor (I suppose that's your rig ?) so you'll have to see for yourself ! With an Athlon XP 3200+ (K7) they worked just fine though.

I found the website for Mo'slo (the correct name) but Slowdown one's appears to be down for good (I'm glad I saved a copy of the soft !). While searching (rapidly) I stumbled on CPUKiller. That's one of the clones I guessed about and it seems there are others... Here are the URL :

Mo'slo

CPUKiller

Hi,
Got the app and put in folder. Now looking around SP folder and I don't see any 'bat file used to start SP'. (I know what a bat file is fyi). Instead I see mech.exe What is exact name of file please and should I expect to find it in SPWAW as opposedto SPIII?
Thanks,
Lin

OK reporting progress as requested:
-- Mouse click -- couldn't figure that out in context of mech.exe
-- MoSlo -- seen this before but hard to find a trial download.
-- CPUKiller -- this did the trick and download free (at least for now?).. Wow I can use my 150mm 8-)

thanks for your great help folks.

Excellent ! I'm pleased to see it worked. About MouseCTL, you have to create the .BAT file. It's really easy to do; you just create an ordinary .TXT file (right click + New document) then change its extension from .TXT to .BAT.
I can't certify it'll work with SPWaW though, for it's a Windows app. . I never tested that actually but only made it work with SP2-SP3. Anyway, it's cool if CPUKiller did the trick for you, for I had never tested this particular soft either [:)]

Just in case someone would like to experiment with Mo'slo (free version) or Slowdown, I still have the files ready.
