Some thoughts on supply

Post by Obsolete »

After digging around into supply a bit, I still find myself a bit lost on this matter. For example, I never seem to run out of gasoline or bullets, I can always keep on marching on.

I did decided to keep a unit locked down to one tile, and have a supply route to it just to see what happens. Unfortunately supply only would go up 1% per turn. This just seems so silly to me, since the lowest your readiness can get is 33%, and if I want to get from 1% supply, to 34% supply, just to add an extra readiness point, my scenario is going to already be over at just a 31 turn-count.

Perhaps I'm still missing something here, because I don't see the importance. The only benefit I've seen is that having a route does let a few hard-ware losses re-build... but that's about it.

Supply depends first of all on the supply level you get with the scenario.

Then, there is the supply level of the unit. Turn on those little supply icons and try to get your units in the best supply hex you can. In playing TOAW, I do this all the time. Getting to understand the supply grid, the 4 (or whatever) hex radius that things extend to, etc, can be a challange but it all ends up shown with those little supply icons.

The only thing you can do beyond that is have a valid HQ adjacent.... which will increase the level of supply by 50%.

So, as far as your unit that is only getting a 1% increase each turn.. probably it is a matter of a number of these things coming into play.

Unsupplied units:
- get no supply
- no replacements
- and looses equipment just based on desertion

When trying to build up supply of a unit, you must move that unit to an hex where supply is easy to get to, when you get there not move the unit, and have cooperative HQ next to it. A unit sitting by itself in a forest far away from roads is not going to get resupplied fast.

I'm not sure what the numbers mean on the supply circles, but my unit in my city was showing 6 on the supply bubbles surrounding it.

6 in the bubble indicates approximately what is being delivered to the unit. 6 is about as bad as it gets, and it means that once you move and attack with units, they will expend their stockpile and will not be able to regain much 'gas and bullets'. Units also have a formation supply level which can reduce this. In the screen shot you can see the supply setting for this formation is 12. That is ugly, and means you will get about nothing every turn. 20-30 in the bubbles is an average for fairly reasonable operations. Usually over 30 means that you have a good supply net with ample supplies. In the Israel 48 scenario, you are stuck with the low level of 6, and nothing you do can change it.

Units do run out of gas and bullets, and when they do they cease to exist.

I said that you couldn't change the low supply level of 6, but you could click the 'high supply' option in the game options menu.

The six supply availaable is even worse than it looks. If you are not adjacent to a headquarters you gain 1/3 less supply. If you move during a turn you gain 1/3 less supply. So a unit active during a turn and not adjacent to a headquarters will only be gaining 2 supply a turn not 6.

Ok, so the number 6 is supposed to mean PERCENTAGE supply?  I suppose having multiple bubbles around you makes no difference, it's just the hex you're in that matters, assuming you have a chain to a source?

Basically yes. The hex you are in is all that matters. Of course you usually have to have a supply path to get any supply. Using your 6 as an example if a unit remains inactive, near a headquarters then you would increase you supply from say 33 to 39 percent. No headquarters or movement would limit your supply gain to 37 (4). No headquarters nearby AND movement would result in 35 (or only a two point gain).

If you want units to recover quickly move them to areas easily supplied (high numbers) adjacent to HQ units and leave them inactive so they can resupply/refit and perform maintenance with the help of support troops.

In adition you must factor in what sPzAbt653 stated about the formation supply efficiency.

According to Ralph's posts, supply will be changed/improved if and when the new patch gets here.  Oops.  He didn't say if and when.  I did.
