detailed combat battle odds

I have looked through the manual and can't seem to find any way to look at the factors each combat will incorporate pre-emptively?

A more detailed query is: Is there a way I can mouse over an enemy and find our what the combat modifiers in play are if I attack an enemy unit?

I know that you eventually start to get a feel for such things, but it is frustrating to find that my infantry in lines that has flanked an opposing unit in colume takes massively more damage than it metted out because my opponent had higher morale, or whatever.

This just makes learning the game more difficult and frustrating.

Not a "if I place the cursor here I get the odds" thingy I'm afraid.
What you should do is;
-learn what upgrades the enemy has obtained and figure out what they do.
-learn the strength/weaknesses of the different troops

A useful tool to learn this, is by doing two things;
1. Accept that the first game or two might be "lost" by you.
2. In battle, after you have encountered something you do not think feels right, look at the combat report and read the information there to see what factors were counted in.

Thanks for the reply. I figured this was the case. It just makes learning the game a harder graft. It is still too good a game to let this undermine my will to continue.
 
I'll get there, but I would think this would perturb more casual gamers - mind you I don't know if this title is actually aiming at them?

You can click (I think right click then left click) on enemy stack ...any container will have info on average morale of units inside.

In general, at the start of the game, French are nearly invincible. You want to meet them only with superior numbers. Turks are on the other hand very weak. Rest of Countries are somewhere in the middle. As game progress, things will get more even.

Ever tried taking on the British Home Army? They kick butt!
I would say that Sweden, Preussia, Britain and France tends to have the best troops in terms of morale and ratio between INF/CAV/Arty as well.
