There are only two kinds of people that understand Marines: Marines and the enemy. Everyone else has a second-hand opinion.

Looks like the control room of a sub to me, unless my nomenclature is wrong.. There just weren't too many spaces with a ladder from above on a WWII sub. Now, on an Ohio, there are a number of them...

I believe the dingus was the black bird. Queeg = Spade (Sam) if I read Pas correctly.

This one i knew from sight, although i've looked up the dates - it is from the action radioed in as "Destroyer Gunning - Wahoo Running".
The particulars:
USS Wahoo (SS-238)
"Scene in the control room during Wahoo's 27 January 1943 action with a Japanese destroyer. When the photo was taken the submarine was at 300 feet, rigged for depth charges. Six charges had just gone off and the crew was awaiting more. Lieutenant Commander Dudley W. Morton, Wahoo's Commanding Officer, reported this action as: "Another running gun fight ... destroyer gunning ... Wahoo running".
Shaved head on crewman at right is a product of an Equator crossing ceremony three days previously."
i THINK the photo was taken by (then Lt) George Grider, who became one of the top US sub commanders later in the war, and whom i worked for (indirectly) back during my summer "vacations" in college.

Yah, you know? I was just trying to run with the (apparent) Humphrey Bogart joke - orderlies eating strawberries - Caine Mutiny - Maltese Falcon ... you know, another of my weak attempts at humor.ORIGINAL: ecwgcx

Have you ever noticed how on-point my pal the Rev always is? Wind him any tighter, and he could be a baseball...

now I understand why Japanese ASW is so bad in WITP. If this photo is real then it explains everything. Look at the guy to the left, they are under DC attack and he´s smiling...

Considering the lighting conditions, blurriness is more likely caused by the length of exposure needed to get a picture.

RE: Name This AE...348
Sub? Depth charge attack?
Option 1)
I see 4 guys testing a futuristic sauna. The guy to the right is just about to adjust the temperature on the big wheel. I guess the guy on the lower left looks so happy because he was the only one able to sneak a cold beer in which he is drinking atm from a cup to not attract any attention. [:D]
Option 2)
Laundry day on a US sub. Everyone waiting for their turn. The guy on the right is just selecting a program for his white cloth. Oh and the guy to the lower left just farted. [:D]
