re Map Size. I have modified the max map size for the COTA Patch 3 to 2500 sq kms, with a max height and width of 80km. That will support a map 80 x 30 or 50 x 50. Theoretically we can make them any size we like. However, the larger the map area the longer it can take for routes to be calculated - especially any that want to go from one side to the next. So any budding scenario designers out there will need to test their scenarios if they use a big map to ensure they are still playable within a reasonable time frame.

You should move the Pacific War game in front of the Russin front game. More of us are more interested in that than yet ANOTHER Russian Front scenario/game.

Tiny bump.
Any new insights into potential future plans for the series? I understand a Market-Garden expansion might be next, but any ideas about what comes after that? I'm asking to look into reading material beforehand!

We will be putting all the cards on the table for discussion once BFTB is released. Once we've made a decision I'll let you know.

But seeing your comment on roads reminded me why I love the AA series so much. In so many wartime accounts I've read of some road being so vital, or some hill, or other aspect of terrain being fought for, due to it's geographical importantance. Yet in so few wargames have I really appreciated it. Yeah, roads are faster, woods slow you down but are better for defence.. blah, blah.. but in HTTR/COTA you really feel the presence of terrain. Roads really are the arteries of the battleground. Place the wrong units in the wrong terrain and you will pay for your mistake. Control a main road in COTA and you likely control the battle, or at least retain some control.
This is SO RIGHT. Mind you, I have been frustrated a countless number of times in COTA with the fact that roads are pretty much the only way to move around (a motorized unit on broken ground in COTA is just getting nowhere with a speed factor of 1% or 2%). This is especially true for the Greek mainland scenarios, the Crete ground was somewhat more forgiving, and you also mainly have foot troops in these scenarios, who are slower but more mobile across difficult ground.
But this frustration is what happens and what happened in reality. This is what you read in the books and you see in WW2 accounts. The road network is paramount (and Battle of the Bulge is a great example of this). As mentioned, in too many wargames you can roam around without too much impediment. Sure, roads give you more speed but you can still move off-road at a decent pace in most wargames. This is a distorsion of reality.
But I do agree that a North African theater game would be a nice break for all of us [:D]

I dunno, but in this same thread, Eddy makes reference to a "team" that was working on a North African game:

The North African team will be covering the early years in the desert from O'Connor's Offensive in 1940 through to Crusader in late 41.
What ever became of it?

It was included in the last patch for COTA as expanded estabs and 2 scenarios with maps.[&:]

Does the North African design team that Eddy makes reference to still exist, or has it been disbanded?

Nah, I just don't wanna reinvent any wheels.
I don't want to duplicate someone else's work.
That sort of thing.
I've got my Battleaxe scenario roughed out, BTW.
Goodguy offered to help me with it, so I sent it off to him this afternoon.

Good luck.[:)]
Thanks Arjuna,
Hopefully, the Battleaxe scenario can be worked up to a reasonable state in a few weeks.
Then, all I have to do is find some generous soul to host three maps and four scenario files.
Got any ideas? [;)]

Try MediaFire. It's free and I've had no problems with it.

Once you get it playtested it should probably be uploaded with the rest of the user-made scenarios: COTA website

The only PTO game I would care about would be Guadalcanal. Anything else would be a griding type gameplay where the Allies always win, it is just a matter of time.
Guadalcanal could also include a lot of off map factors to influence things like supply rates and reinforment scheduels.

How about something like Imphal or the IJA offensive against Malaya/Singapore?
Or how about the Japanese operations in Luzon in 1941-42?

Agreed, except the operations in Luzon were really just the operations in Bataan. A hard fought battle, but not much in the way of tactics besides a couple of infiltrations by the Japanese and counterattacks by the American forces.
The first two you mention had quite a few possibilities either way and room to maneuver, and would make excellent Panther operational games. New Guinea also had a lot of to-ing and fro-ing, but was really only the one track, with a few hooks, infiltrations, operations on either side of it. China might hold something, though I am not knowledgeable enough to comment.
Apart from these, it is mainly naval operations and island hopping (whether it be Japanese or American/Allied), better simulated on a squad based game rather than operational. Or they make up the already mentioned "grind".
