Windtalkers

Post by Vetkin »

How did you guys find the movie??

I just saw it today and......

I rate it 7 out of 10....

I don't think War and John Woo mix well

And the storyline was screwy, why did they even have that girl there who kept on writing to Nicolas Cage? What's the purpose?

Nice sets though, and weapons and costumes and everything... :)

I even saw Shermans and Stuarts in the movie

Their Garands and M1903s are screwy though, the Garands sometimes fire more than 8 rounds (I didn't count hehehehe) and the M1903s acted like semi-autos, just like the Garands...

I'm pretty sure Chief's USN, and Viking's Mountain Man (Dun-duh-dun!) IE USMC.

But I dunno.

Either way, Viking is Chief's Bullet-Catcher, so they might as well be USN/USMC.

As long as you keep your pretty guns pointed at the enemy, we'll keep supplying the boats to get you guys to where you need to be.

<-- Grew up on a NAS.

What's a Marine without a Navy? Can't get across the ocean without boats you know :p (Though this is quickly becoming untrue.)

Realism aside...

Post by KG Erwin »

...when I watched "Windtalkers" on DVD tonight I couldn't help but think of a real life version of SPWaW being re-enacted, warts and all. It would be a hoot if snippets of this could be superimposed on a USMC-Jap SPWaW combat, ala the video snippets featured on some of the John Tiller "Battleground" Series. In SPWaW terms, it looks and feels like some of the island battles I've fought in a USMC long campaign. There ARE some very realistic-looking sequences, but they play second-place to an almost cartoonish version of Marines in combat. Their valor isn't downplayed, by any means. If anything, it's enhanced. I'd like to read a Pacific veteran's view of how combat was portrayed in this movie. Overall, I was pleased with the movie, "as a movie", but Hollywood has yet to show what it was really like in a battle like Peleliu or Iwo Jima or Tarawa OR Saipan. Maybe I'm wrong--maybe those hand-to-hand combats that John Woo so favored in this movie really happened, but I doubt it.

That reminds me of a story I read years ago in Reader's Digest's 'Humor in Uniform':

During the Korean War there was a friendly rivalry between the U.S. Marines and the British Royal Marines as to which were tougher. Once, there were two U.S. Marines and two Royal Marines sharing the same foxhole on the front lines. During a lull in the battle, one of the U.S. Marines stuck his head up over the lip of the foxhole to take a look around. Just at that moment, a spent round bounced into his mouth, and knocked out one of his teeth. Dropping back down into the foxhole, he spit the two teeth out.

The other Marine, thinking quickly, quipped, "If you'd caught it the way they taught us in boot camp, you wouldn't have lost the tooth!" :D

Got the same feeling watching Band of Brothers. Again and again... and again. :p :)

..ofcourse, main difference is that in BoB, the paratroopers are actually useful for something more than just being a nuisance to the enemy rear. :D
