Too Much Offense

Post by henry296 »

As a test I just did a comparison of my league stats to the Lahman DB total. The setup: 1983 replay, real stadiums, all teams CPU controlled, 35 man roster, no early import option, no ratings changes in season, default XML file.

Here is the comparison: (Real vs Sim)

BA - .261 vs. 288
OBP - .324 vs. .344
H - 37,443 vs. 43,387
BB - 13,518 vs. 15,057
AB - 143,538 vs. 150,861
HR - 3,301 vs. 3,074
R - 18,170 vs. 18,936
SB - 3,325 vs. 1,101
K - 21,716 vs. 23,590

I noticed the total were slightly different between the Team Batting and Team Pitching Screens. Is that because the totals only include players on the current roster? Even so, the numbers are much higher in the sim than real life. I'm going to try a more recent season and see if I see something similar.

I believe that is correct.

Just ran the 2004 season and not quite as dramatic but still about 7% more hits with fewer home runs and less steals.  In this case, however, less runs.    Overall batting average of 275 vs actual of 266.

Interesting, thanks for analyzing this.

For folks not familiar with PureSim (and that are not afraid of editing configuration files) almost every engine setting can be tweaked in the puresim.xml file in your game installation folder. It is pretty well documented. So, if you want to tweak a little, I'd be interested in seeing the results.

When I get home from Vacation I'll make some tweaks (in the default XML file and the code). The good news is the sim engine is very high fidelity so I am confident we can get near-perfect results out of the box.

I am working on tweaking the XML and will share my findings.  I've also played with fatigue and injuries because I saw too many players with 600+ ABs.

Another interesting observation.   If I use the default ballparks the numbers are better in fact in that case batting averages and obp% are low.  HRs are still low.  As a I looked at the team detail in the "real" ballparks I didn't notice anything that would indicate that a particular team was too high.   I'm going to try PadresFans ball parks and see what happens.

Just simmed the 1983 season with PadresFans ballparks instead of those that came with the game using the default XML.  Much, much better.  BA is a tick too high for and little bit too far extra base hits as SLG% is 380 vs 389.  The one stat that is way off are stolen bases as actual is about 2.3 higher than my sim while SB% is pretty good.

Interesting. I'll make a note to take a look at his parks when I get back from vacation. Having the game automatically use the correct parks for historical sims, is on the list of things I'd like to tackle at some point as well.

While we're at it, I noticed that the correct regions don't always appear when setting up historical associations. In my 1939 setup, Washington defaulted to Minneapolis, the Boston Bees defaulted to Atlanta, the NY Giants were in San Francisco, the St Louis Browns were in Baltimore, and my beloved Brooklyn Dodgers were in (gasp!) LA!

Even after selecting historical ballparks, the regions & weather had to be manually changed. I suppose that the region settings are not embedded in the .prk files.
