I lost our HR when my old computer died, but Nemo and you may need to revisit the ability to do strategic bombing on a reduces scale. We had talked about a limited amount of it with it slowly ramping up. As it is now he can almost cripple you in a matter of days.
There are no rules ... He could go for the jugular, and I'd be fairly powerless or it would be meaningless if I sent all my fighters home cause then I'd collapse just as quick.
Do you recall any post on AE about reducing the effectiveness of strategic bombing??

There has been a few small quiet whispers, but nothing which I would call substantial. Infact I'd say that the AE team have done a great job talking about everything bar the economy and strategic bombing.

I know QBall & others have asked some things about engines and upgrades and others have chimed in about the model, but on the whole, the answers have been less than completely satisfying - so I guess we will have to wait for its imminent release.

[*]Eniwetok - went in with a Bombardment TF, which had to deal with hordes of PT's, the bombardment worked fine, was going to follow up with an Angel attack, but am trying to mix up my play, cause Nemo is reading me too well. CS Nisshin got hit by some PT fire and limped back to Truk.
[*]Spotted an allied unit Sth of Skovorodino, how the hell did it cross the river in such quick time ? Units are being retasked. There were two units, now only one, so I assume it has gone south along the track ...
[*]A New TF in the Nth, could spell trouble again, so ships and planes have been vectored. My last wish is for another Fast Transport attack on one of the remaining Atolls.

The second and third have been very uneventful, so I'll glaze over them by commenting on Nemo's email, that things will move slowly now until he has enough planes upgraded on CV's to take me on ...

I don;t believe this fully, cause I'm sure he is thinking Sth Borneo and maybe moving the Australians into the action.

Had some nice upgrades already this month, CVE's, BB's, Yugumo and Kagero class DD's also get added ASW and AA. There are about 30 ships needing upgrades, ad as much as I need these ships at sea, I see the upgrade as a great chance to make a slight difference.

Despite Nemo saying there will be a pause in the action ... there is plenty.

I'm trying to finally retake Cagayan with 3 extra divisions and 10K supplies landing today.

LB - conducted ground attacks at Cagayan and I'm hoping in 2 days to have it encircled and taken.

More major action today, 3 major hot spots are detailed in the screen shot.

[*]Troops continue to offload at Cagayan, harassed by small numbers of Vengeance operating from the Amboina. 2-3 days before an all out assault!
[*]3 Ground attacks at Cagayan on seperate units, hoping to give a bit of disruption before the push... A little info of forces there
Ground combat at Cagayan [Mndno]

Allied Bombardment attack
Attacking force 17659 troops, 176 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1091
Defending force 105450 troops, 1200 guns, 838 vehicles, Assault Value = 3086
[*]At Davao AP/AK's are continuing to be hunted in the harbour, many of my DD's are in Japan upgrading.
[*]Shimushiri Jima is still being hit by my LB, there are hordes of PT's protecting, but I'm thinking of clearing them soon.
[*]Ulithi - continuing to bomb to make sure base isn't upgraded.
[*]Wake Is - continuing hits by Allied LB, this base is isolated and will not be resupplied anytime soon.
[*]For the loss of 5 Betty's and a Helen at Ponape got 1 torpedo hit on CA Houston, which is reported on fire
[*]Lastly Port Moresby falls to the greens. There was just a fragment left there, maybe I should have made an effort, but its done now.
[*]I lost 50 fighter planes on the ground at Canton --- there are words to describe this, but I will refrain & for 17 Pe-2's!

Damian - is this the mod where the Pe2 has a ceiling of something like 36,000 ft.  I had a discussion about a year ago with a modder which went along the lines of that sort of thing is going to seriously compromise the mod IMO, because

a) My understanding is that it is not within the Pe2's capabilities (everything I saw on military history sites had them limited (IIRC) to 27 or 28 thousand ft.

b) Not something the game engine is going to handle well because the it only considers the height of the aircraft on the approach.  If they come in above the CAP then they can dive down to 2,000ft deliver an accurate bomb on the airfield/shipping and escape without ever being shot at by the CAP. If nothing else a boat load would be downed as they lumber off having delivered their payload.

Resembles a super weapon a bit too much for my liking.

Yakface,(sorry don't know your real name)

Thanks for joining in ...

This is Nemo121's Empires Ablaze mod, the link gives more detail as to the design decisions that Nemo made.

We are playing pretty much without any HR's - which has been interesting to say the least.

The Pe's do and have in fact owned the skies, and have been a bit of a super weapon, because of their altitude. While Nemo and I have discussed it on a few occasions, I'd have to conclude that they are more formidable than the high alt LB. But in return the Japanese also get a lot of superweapons, more CV's, the Angel,Behemoth bombers, TojoIII fighters and a much larger LCU outlay.

Having said that the Pe's/LB do have a low replacement rate, and it is the job of the Japanese commander to eliminate the threat on the ground, which could have been done, had it not been in my fledgling hands (although I will say they have been well protected throughout).

Nemo has pushed me back from each encounter with these DB's, sure my replacement rate it better, but essentially, there were too few High alt AA, and I only just got the under performing high alt fighter the OscarII recently, which has been a disappointment. As I said to him, it is not the replacements, but the closing of airfields that cause the greatest challenge - something the Japanese are hamstrung by coding bias (even with Allied engineer TOE).

Some people will look at this mod and think it is unacceptable, imbalanced and too demanding. I disagree, for each challenge there is an appropriate response, it is just difficult to come to that conclusion and act upon it. And it is well suited to Nemo's blitzkrieg style of play (as seen with his game V Hartwig(who took over from 2ndACR iirc)

Overall, I think there are nuggets for both sides, not sure the nuggets are totally even, but they are there ... and each new super weapon has a response as unpalatable as some of them are. Anyway, I've enjoyed playing this mod as a what if scenario, and would play it again in AE - if available. Nemo is a far superior player, but I think I've earned his respect over the course of the game, and hamstrung him in the last few months (except Kwajalein).

Cheers for the thoughts, maybe you should talk more to the horses-mouth so to speak about the design cause everything you say is the truth with the existing game engine.

Damian may disagree with me, but the decisions made by the Japanese player on turn 1 have a greater impact on the course of the game than any other mod that I have seen (or played). The decision to invade Russia (along with the airplane usage glitch) or not along with how you spend the 10,000 Political Points is the first of many minefields that the Japanese player has to navigate.

If Nemo moves this over to AE with minor changes, then Damian's experience in this game will make him a much more formidable opponent.

Michael,
I agree with you wholeheartedly and is something I forgot to say in my blurb above ... Nemo has included many pitfalls for the unwary or inexperienced, this is just one of them.

Thanks for the support, maybe not formidable, but certainly dirtied and bled.

[*]Went into Ponape again, Nemo told me that the airfield was at 68 damage, so he declined the battle. My SCTF found PT's only and declined battle. Angels and Betty's close the field completely.
[*]Shimushiri Jima - My SCTF sank and Ak and DD SN Baku.
[*]Soerabaja - sent in 80 LB causing limited damage (38 airfield hits), just to spread the fighters a bit.
[*]More Mansyu and Nissan engine factories ordered as the Behemoth (Mansyu) and TojoIII are cutting into my pools too much.

Then the wheels fell off ...
[*]My ground attacks from Clarke failed to materialise, and not only that but I had been toying with the idea of shock attacking Cagayan, I think I set one off, but didn't click set all in this hex ... this is the failed result. I'm annoyed with my play here. More troops and supplies sent!
Ground combat at Cagayan [Mndno]

Japanese Shock attack (and look at these numbers ... I have supplies and most are prepped with good leaders)

Attacking force 105591 troops, 1209 guns, 835 vehicles, Assault Value = 3088
Defending force 23820 troops, 175 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1087

Japanese max assault: 794 - adjusted assault: 1004
Allied max defense: 829 - adjusted defense: 1570

Japanese assault odds: 0 to 1 (fort level 0)

Japanese ground losses:
593 casualties reported
Guns lost 17
Vehicles lost 2

Allied ground losses:
707 casualties reported
Guns lost 12

More action tomorrow, weather permitting.

Number 1 ... Jesselton, two tiered attack which didn't work as well as planned.

[*]CVTF raced toward Jesselton, hopefully to provide escort to the bombers, I know that if you are almost inline with the bombers, then sometimes (I'm not sure of this), you get a good convergence between the two... this didn't happen today (and as I was too far out for a sweep), well I lost a few Angels again...

[*]The Allies continue to hit Canton with Pe-2's, airfield damage is climbing, but the real cost is starting to impinge on my Tojo III pools. 35 Tojo's and 29 Oscar II's destroyed on the ground...from the 120 Pe's attacking. 22 will never return home.
[*]Saigon - Sent in 84 Angels, just to mix things up, 8 were destroyed, many turned back, destroyed a bit (20~30 planes) on the ground (nothing like what the PE's can do)
[*]Swept Jesselton, and am surprised that more carnage didn't occur.

[*]Upgraded some more CV Zeros to TojoIII's and more supplies on the way to various caches.

Since I haven't re-installed this mod since I got a new computer, what do you have in AA units to put at your major bases within the range of his Pe-2s?? It would seem that you could place large amounts of AA units, especially those that would hit them at 2000 feet, at a base and take out a large number of his planes.

Yeah Micheal, but I didn't want to commit more troops to Canton, I've left them on Taiwan, which might have been a mistake, also many of my AA units were scattered to the wind after the long march of defeat from Bangkok and are just now ready for action again.

[*]My troops continue to offload at Cagayan, getting ready for the final push, I'll have over 3000AV there in the next few days. Supplies are tight, but I'm stripping many places just to get them up to scratch. I know Nemo is going to send in the farm, I just hope I'll have enough fighters to dent this charge when it occurs.
[*]Canton is DB'ed again by Pe's, and my mind is made up to pull out in 2 days. Maybe this was a mistake in hindsight (I've just run the 12/1 turn)
[*]Surface action near Jolo kills a few LCM's. but it would have been nice to get some more. (In the following turn, no SC action occured and I'm left wondering why ??)

[*]Canton is crushed by multiple LB groups. I had withdrawn my Tojo's back to Taiwan and Mikes,Zero's and Oscars defended bravely, but alas not capable enough to score a victory. I've edited all the bombing info ...

So Canton will fall in one or two days after some ground attacks ... that's the next load bearing domino -> now it'll get interesting! or maybe will just become a walkover. I had hoped to take Cagayan and then move my troops back here, I think I might be out of time to do that now. Such are the winds of war.

[*]Soerabaja - hit the airfield again, nice 61 hits.
[*]Noted the Allies withdrew a load of fighters out of Jesselton, but they'll be back by the next turn unfortunately.
[*]Still bombing the hell out of Cagayan and Taytay though, and the air-ground attacks will commence very shortly.

Despite the fact that I've had DD's at Jolo, one of which was heavily damaged by a SS torp today, the Allied LCM's come in and offload with no resistance. Can anyone explain how 6 DD's miss these barges for two days?

Usual stuff:
[*]loads of training runs on various bases.
[*]Canton hit by LB closing the airfield totally.
[*]Hit Taytay and Cagayan again.
AV check ...
Ground combat at Cagayan [Mndno]

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 94338 troops, 1197 guns, 545 vehicles, Assault Value = 3598
Defending force 22398 troops, 148 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1014

Allied ground losses:
35 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

[*]Sank SS KVII at Cagayan, many others hit in search ops, which is a turn around from the last few weeks.

Nemo says not much is happening and the next week will be a very slow ... yeah but the combat Txt report is 22kb with many many training runs, and then full blooded body shots to Canton, Cagayan etc ...

I've been spending most of my time trying to regroup lcu fragments, shift more supplies, repair ships (CV Yamato(180 Dur) has finally got to 13, which has taken months to achieve - she was hit in the CPac many months ago ~ I'm hoping she will be a 10 in a week, and then onto the CPac she goes).

All CV's in the CPAC have TojoIII's now, and most are fitted to 100% ac capacity. I'm thinking about adding a few more fighters as well, cause the Allies have loads of fighters on their CV's. Air losses have fallen in the last two days, this is a good thing as I'll need them shortly.

All until tomorrow

16 Jan '42 -- Despite few ground attacks hitting Cagayan, I finally take the base after 5+ months of seige!

But Jolo comes to life with fighters and my attacks here today were repelled. It now must be nullified before it becomes another more dangerous Cagayan. I hope my pilots don't become lost, they've only been bombing Cagayan for months, and might have forgotten how to use a map and compass. [:D]

Thanks Floyd ... Oh I'm happy, damn happy actually [8D], now onto planning what to do with 4K AV, and how I can make Nemo's life a little more uncomfortable. I think I've had enough of defense and maybe an early Spring attack (it is near the Equator after all), will provide some more good cheer.

17 Jan '43

[*]The day starts after a few Allied runs on Swatow & Canton, with my attack on Bandjermasin (Borneo), yielding some good hits on the airbase and destroying a few a/c.
[*]Roxas and Taytay are hit by small forces of my LB/DB combinations. 37 total hits at Taytay
[*]Jolo was the big target for the day ... map included for clarity, max force, max damage.
1. Sweeps from CV based and Davao.
2. mid-sized LB attack from Davao accompanied by CV sweep and base a/c.
3. large LB attack from Clark Field (256 hits)

[*]Ponape,Uruppu Jima & Ulithi are suppressed by my LB.
[*]Bankha Sumatra, been flying troops evacs here for the last few days to get out 2 Div's, got most out, the troops were finally surrounded and are captured... Still I saved about 150 AV from here.

On a note here I'm almost near PZB's game of Japanese planes lost and that went into '46

-- maybe not something to be proud of, but Nemo and I have given no quarter, none asked[X(]
