Debug Error!

Post by Rexor »

Hello,

I just downloaded the latest FoF patch, installed it, and then tried to start the game. After a little while I received the following error message entitled "Microsoft Visual C++ Debug Library"

Program: C:\Matrix Games\Forge of Freedom\Forge of Freedom.exe
Module:
file: i386\chkesp.c
Line: 42

"The value of ESP was not properly saved across a function call. This is usually a result of calling a function declared with one calling convention with a function pointer declared with a different calling convention.

(Press Retry to debug the application.)"

I pressed "retry" and, every time, it simply quits after asking me to send a report to you guys (which I did). Any ideas....?

EDIT: I just reinstalled the game and the patch, and came up with precisely the same error message. Nothing like this ever happened with FoF before the latest patch. Help!

Do you get the same error message when you reinstall just the game without the patch?

No. I could start the reinstalled game without the patches, getting the game to come up as version 1.2.3. Both times I was able to do this, and both times the patch gave me the above error message.

The patch really shouldn't change anything major with the engine, so I'm wondering whether you might have had some corruption in the download.  Perhaps trying downloading it again?  The patch only adds a very small amount of new graphics memory requirement, but other than that, I can't think of anything substantial that it would have changed.  I don't know offhand what file: i386\chkesp.c  is (it's some Microsoft thing), but I will look into this and see whether an understanding of what this file does might give me a clue as to what sort of problem you might be having.

Thanks a lot, Eric. I appreciate whatever insight you can offer. Mind you, I downloaded the patch a second time after trashing it just to be sure, but got the same mystifying results. I even wiped FoF completely off my hard drive and installed from scratch with the disks, then patched up, but no dice. What makes it so strange is that I've never had problems with FoF, and I don't know of anyone else who has mentioned a problem even remotely like this one in the forums. My computer is rather ordinary and powerful enough, I can't figure it out.

Hey, a friend of mine who happens to be a computer tech managed to sort this out for me the day before yesterday, though it took him a while to hunt down what was going on. Anyway, thanks for the response, and it looks like we're in the clear.
