An informal poll about the upcoming Downfall scenario

Post by DuckofTindalos »

As you may or may not know, the plan is to include an Operation Downfall scenario at some point post-release. Since I'm going to be responsible for it, I thought I'd bring this little question to the viewing several.

It's a multiple-choice question, with two possible answers, but I realize I'll probably get about 18 different answers when I'm done. Them's the breaks...[:D]

The question concerns the map, and how big it's going to be. Would you rather have:

A): The inclusion of the Philippines and Marianas, to historically simulate where the invasion forces would have departed from, but have a lot of empty ocean, with Allied shipping plodding along unmolested (since the Japs had nothing to interdict them with until they closed the Home Islands anyway).

or

B): Have a smaller map, with Okinawa and Iwo Jima being the main Allied bases. Helps with playability, cuts down on the tedium factor and gets the action going quicker.

What'll it be, gents?

B..Get to the Nitty Gritty..

IMHO going with "A" would be like including Washington D.C. in a map of Gettysburg.(It was there for support, and was where the Army of the Potomac was based from.)

A --- You need a base for the B-29's unless your presupposing Okinawa has been fitted out for the purpose.

My vote is for A, for the same reason that Treespider mentions. Without at least the Marianas, the allied OOB will be greatly limited.

A - It would also allow other modders to use the map for a "what if" scenario.

Sometimes faster action may be appreciated, but I find one of the real tests of WITP is organizing and logistics, so I think one must include the fairly long supply lines of an Operation Downfall scenario.

Therefore my vote is for option B.

How about either expanding Okinawa and Iwo to hold the B-29's or include only the most northern bases in the PI? Unless you can do some kind of off-map box?

B. I like historicity, but I would also love to play the scenario. [:)] "Hey, I'm reliving Operation 'Repetitive Tedium' that preceded the actual battle!!" is not something I usually look forward for.

Off map areas for some of the Allied assets, if feasible, would be the way to go.

Definitely A, for the same reason Treespider gives. Also, those troops gotta stage from somewhere, just don't seem quite right for them all to teleport to Okinawa - there's not enuf geishas in the Teahouse of the August Moon.

For what it's worth, you might consider adding some Westing. Brits were doing some stuff in Malaya, and there was some Ozzies with a hard-on looking to do the DEI. A sideshow, I know, but it does give the Japanese something to do other than sit still for nukes and the 2nd armored. Just a thought.

That could be a scenario in and of itself.....

I'm considering doing a nice compact Burma scenario myself...as well as my China mod.
