Name This Equipment

Post by Jonathan Pollard »

I saw some equipment carried by the Japanese soldiers invading the Aleutians that I could not identify. To me it looks like some kind of breathing apparatus, possibly for use against poison gas attacks. Any other ideas? Take a look at the 0:42 - 0:45 point of the following Youtube video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y57Mpk8Q ... re=related

A somewhat higher quality view of the equipment can be gotten by downloading the video dated 1942-12-09 from the following site and going to the 11:17 point of the video:

http://nsl-archiv.info/Filme/Deutsche-W ... n/heil.php

The second video also shows a US 4 engine bomber attacking Japanese ships and flying boats in the Aleutians from what appears to be a fairly low altitude, may be proof that 4E bombers did attack ships using altitudes under 10K feet, although in Witp terms it probably would be considered a port attack.

Thanks GI. Was any US poison gas captured in the Philippines to make the Japanese suspect that US use of poison gas would be possible?

do not know about the PTO side, but a LW night time attack on the port of Bari (which was dubbed the 2nd PH) did hit a US Cargo ship that had Posion Gas in the hold, a number of workers and some base troops were killed, because no one really knew what the cargo was for this ship

I think depending, it was standard, to carry Gas Masks and stuff back then too

The Japanese were known to use poison gas on occasion - see "The Longest War" for use of cyanide grenades... it wasn't very often, but...

Maybe they figured they would need to have them for their own usage? [&:]

Illegal? No. In bad taste? Immoral? But considering your choice of log in name, I'd suspect that the more people you incite and upset, the happier you would be. I belive that psycologist call that "an attention getting device". I call it "looking for trouble". What can I say , except that I admire the system that gives you the right to inflame and generally act dispicably. [8|]

You are more understanding than I am AW1. Freedom of speech protection doesn't apply to walking into a movie theater and yelling fire and nor should it apply in this circumstance.

I find it in bad taste and nothing short of trolling that the OP would choose a screen name of an admitted spy against America; and use a video such as that to post in a public forum in which political type discussions are forbidden.

It is clearly ment to be offensive and as such should require removal.

Additionally, the following forumn rules are being violated by the OP:

1. No foul language or any type of language that would be consider abusive this includes any materials which are knowingly false and/or defamatory, inaccurate, abusive, sexual oriented, vulgar, obscene, hateful, harassing, profane, racist, threatening, invasive of a person's privacy, or encourages conduct that would constitute a criminal offense, give rise to civil liability, or that otherwise violates any local, state, national or international law or regulation. Bolded words are clearly violated. Additionally, the OP claims his location is a federal prision.

2. No posting of any copyrighted material unless the copyright is owned by yourself or one of Matrix Games, its developers, or its agents. NBC clearly claims copyright to the video clip on the OP's profile page

3. No Trolling. Trolling is whenever someone is clearly, deliberately posting in a manner for the purpose of angering and/or insulting the other participants of the message board. Trolling could be directed towards one user or a group of users. Trolling DOES NOT encourage further discussion; it only encourages personal attacks and will not be tolerated. Self explanitory

I'm not really understanding, It's simply I feel that as offensive as he is, the afore mentioned person (I don't even want to mention his name, as it is that of one of those dispicable individuals to ever turn his coat on our country) , but he has very carefully set himself right on the edge and letter of the law. I'm already "under a cloud" with management for my previous comments ("double secret probation" you might say), so I'll not go too far out on a limb here. Frankly , I do agree with you Whipple (In fact I generally do). But unless the mods and management agree , there's not much to be done. My intent was simply to say to the poster "Yes, we get your comment, noted, now run along a play some where else. And oh, by the way , we will be watching you to cross that ragged edge OVER the line". As I said on an much earlier post (and got in trouble for it) The forum DOES have a "Nieghborhood watch".

It is offensive to give one the name of a spy?
So if I had the name Guderian, I'd be kicked as well, as he's responsible for the death of allied soldiers?
(Maybe that ignorance is the result of your reeducation after world war 2, but I'd never be enraged by such a traitor...)

What's that video about? Something with 9/11?

Edit:
I've looked into his profile... Well, that's really not gentle...

I see you're back to your old ways. I've spoken with you before about your sig and avatar, which are definitely not apolitical. Remove them and clean up your profile or I'll have to clean them up myself and ban your account for a while. Political discussion is not allowed here. Your sig and avatar is included in every post you make and definitely "counts".

Perhaps if you lost friends on 9/11 (I did, and nearly lost my wife---and got to watch it happening) you might not be quite so "insensitive". I happen to admire Guderian. He was a good soldier, and a brilliant general. Pollard was a traitor. There is a different. But I guess that just the "Re-education" speaking. [8|]

I'm sorry!

I didn't know your personal relation to 9/11, so I hope you forgive me. I hadn't realized he celebrates this attack in both avatar and video in his profile. This together with his signature - that I haden't realized as well - tells enough about him.

What I ment about reeducation is, that patriotism is something very different in Germany than its oviously in the US.
I was heavily insulted in this forum just because I underestimated the US part of the victory in WW2 in the eyes of some in a discussion. This would be unthinkable for me to insult someone for such a "neglible" thing in my eyes.
Moreover, a good example for our society:
The first monuments for destertes in WW2 were built in the last years! They remember those who left their comrades in battle to run away - even if the others died because of that.
Now, the Bundestag will abrogate all convictions of "war treason". That doesn#t only mean those who ran away and were cought, it will also abrogate the convictions of those who have sabotaged their industrial products which led to the death of german soldiers without enemy contact as their planes crashed, their artillery exploded or their subs sank (like U-1053) without enemy contact.

The next step apparently will be the criminalistaion of those who fought and didn't run away...

We always don't talk about war criminals, just of ordinary guys like my grandpas and grand grandpas that were conscripted...

I hope you understand that the German society is obviously very different in terms of patriotism. Even as I'm right wing and would feel very comfortable in the GOP, I still wouldn't care too much if someone has the name of a traitor...

I didn't intend to insult anyone, I'm sorry if I did so...

I didn't intend to insult anyone, I'm sorry if I did so...

It's not the name of the traitor that inflames me as much as the choice of the name was intended to inflame. I was serving in the USN at the time of Pollards treason. Like the Walker family treason, his actions had a direct and personal affect on myself, members of my family serving in that service, and many of my friends. I take it personally , because it WAS very personal. Try telling someone who's house was burned down, that the arsonist who did it wasn't a bad guy!

I understand Germany and Germans have a different point of view on the issue, but I'm sorry, we are not discussing Germany or a German. You have your concepts of what is right among your people and belifs. That is your right and privalage. Please extend us the same courtesey.

I recall the discussion you refer to. As I recall, the objects from the Americans was that you minimized their role in the second world war. They took offense, and were rather rude to you. That is and was unfortunate. But in fairness , when you jab people in a "sensitive" spot (or in this case issue) a violent reaction is not unusual, nor should it be unexpected. In other words, when you say something that someone finds insulting, is it really surprising that they insult you back? Is it juvenile? Probably. But men are not angels, and I do not know a lot of people who easily "turn the other cheek".

As my grandfather used to say, "when you tease a dog, you shouldn't be surprised if he turns around and bites you."

No
I said the side that destroyed 80% of the Wehrmacht's might was descisive. One may disagree but I will never understand why a different point of view in an academic cause will make sane people to insult.

I told you about the situation in Germany to explain why emotional reactions aren't comprehensible to me, not to start a discussion about Germany.

Anyway, I won't understand how someone can't stay cool here. So maybe we should end this discussion here. Again, I'm sorry if I have insulted someone, this wasn't my intention.

I don't think anyone has a problem with academic discussion. But did you ever notice the wording of an academic text book is usually bland, specific and some what antiseptic. Not calculated to offend , but rather to put you to sleep. What I'm in essence trying to say (I might as well be blunt) I don't think anyone was offended with your logic, but your words and manner , despite whatever your intention was, very much annoyed people. To simplify , It's not so much what you say , it's how you say it." You seek to proke discussion, but more often provoke argument, sometimes anger.

I have no desire to discuss Germany. The subject is not germain to this forum. With the exception of a couple of surface raiders and u-boats , Germany was not directly involved in the Pacific. I completely accept that you didn't mean to give offense. But please consider this. Words are powerfull. With words we weave magic, create, destroy and build and tear down relationships. Please choose wisely. Please be willing to consider that maybe the reason your rational , logical discussion got disrailed is not because of other people being mindless jerks , but because a badly crafted phrase struck a nerve. In the US we have a phrase that is used to indicate a nasty, insulting question ,"when did you stop beating your wife".

If you would like to continue this, or any other discussion , please feel free to PM , or email me. You can reach me at AW1Steve, at the Yahoo.com site. But I agree, you and I should finish on this particular forum. [:)]

Well, maybe my english is not good enough. I never intended to bring any emotions into this particual discussion and still got aggressivly attacked and insulted.
I couldn't understand why and the only logical explanation was that some national chauvinists can't accept anything else but "USA is the best".

Well, maybe I should stop discussing anything here, this seems to be better..
