Those are some awfully big 5" turrets.  Any explanation why they were so large?

Maybe they had big ready racks to the side of the turret?  That's the only guess I can make.

I know many IJN boats were modified for tropical duty, which meant turrets receiving a steel skin offset from the turret proper to form a heat shield. Maybe this is why they look so large.

I assume that the size of the gun detachment played a large part in determining the turret size. In the case of the twin mounts such as those shown, the detachment size was 16. For the single mounts it was 10. The turret had to provide a fully enclosed working environment for a detachment of this size as well as housing most of the guns' bulk plus ammunition handling facilities, so I suspect you would find there was little in the way of spare space internally when it was fully manned.

Since Yukikaze was one of the relatively few Japanese destroyers to survive the war, better to say that her destiny lay in razor blades rather than a reef. [:)]

The turrets on that DD look wider than twin 5 inch mounts on US ships.

And deeper, the USN 5" 38 twins were more "square" and taller.  Also it appears that the IJN breaches must be much closer as the space of the rifles aren't as wide as the USN
