AW1Steve, you were not personally meant by the last paragraph of my post. I was just venting my frustration about stereotypes bandied about endlessly by certain Mass Media. I'm sorry if you had a different impression.

I'm with you that pride in belonging to a group, a community is a natural, a good thing. Just don't call that Chauvinism. You use that term a little too carelessly. Chauvinism is a poisonous, poisonous thing, and I'm glad that, finally, a majority of Germans seem to have understood that (and behave accordingly), so don't be surprised if we take exception at too loose a use of that word.

Finally, "Deutschland, Deutschland über alles" is NOT the German national anthem any more, it is sung today only by drunken football hooligans or Neo-Nazis precisely because it was twisted by the Nazis to the meaning you refer to. When the Song of Germany was written in 1841, it was a cry for national unity by a liberal idealist at a time when "Germany" was nothing more than a cultural concept encompassing some 39 sovereign territories, and calling for German unity could (and did) easily land you in prison. I think it a pity that the original intention of the song has been lost so completely.

pasternakski, I'm with you in that you can't take everything that is written in the Wikipedia as gospel, but some of the content is a lot more reliable than Fox News or the National Enquirer, and the article I referred to is an example of that. BTW, WTH is Paul Harvey?

One of the many things that I like about this forum is the differing perspectives that are presented here, and the wealth of knowledge that is so often displayed. The fact that sometimes discussions get a little heated is ok, as long as we stop short of duelling [:)]

Personally I think the German Nation's history is very interesting for example. And I tend to forget what an interesting mix of ancient traditions, coupled with a relativey modern nation state it represents.

I'm sorry, old bean, but implying Fox News and the National Enquirer are similar in any way sounds like a ratings ploy by CNN, which is a primary example of the pot calling the kettle black, except they speak from different sides of the stove.

That's what my German professor taught me. He was much more in favor of the Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit verse for sure. That was really what the song was trying to convey. Germany struggled for centuries for unification, and it is certainly understandable in the upheavals of the 1840s to see such a song emerge.

...and that's exactly the point. Think what it must have taken, over the course of centuries, to create anything even close to a unified country (or empire, or republic, or kingdom, or what have you) in east central Europe, given the myriad nationalities, ethnicities, and beliefs of the post-Middle Ages. The shifts in culture, the incursions of the Mongols and the Ottomans, the emergence of early Russian nationality, and so on and so on.

What a fascinating study. I'm glad I undertook it (and it never ends for me). Few elsewhere seem to have done so in recent decades. It says so much about where Europe has been and why it is how it now is.

For example, the resurgent nostalgia for the DDR (and the effect on future German society and politics) becomes much more understandable when you have a decent foundation in both Teutonic history and the influence of Slavic people and ideas on the development of Germanic societies.
