Display Resolution

Post by pompack »

I know I have seen this before but I can't seem to find the right thread

Background: I recently had to replace my monitor and discovered that they only seem to make wide format displays these days. So I got a "23 inch" display in 16:9 aspect ratio, 1920x1080 resolution. It works great for spreadsheets but stretches the WitP map and makes overhead views of P38s look really strange

Question: How do I make WitP look "right" on a 16:9 monitor?

EDIT: I did find the "Window" thread that allows me to run in a window without distortion, but the window is very small. What I need is the mechanism that changes the displayed resolution to something LESS THAN 1920x1080 so the undistorted WitP window is larger. I can do it manually each time I call (and exit) WitP but that is a pain. (Note that 1440x900 is the screen resolution that gives the best image when playing in a window.)

With Nvidia graphics, I can:
right click on desktop and open NVIDIA Control Panel
Expand Display, Change flat panel scaling
Pick option 2 - Use NVIDIA scaling with fixed-aspect ratio
Makes WitP run with black bars either side of the screen

"right click on desktop" was a great help in itself because I have been going back to the Control Panel to get the NVIDIA CP. Just with this it is quite easy to change the resolution with only three quick clicks.

However I don't see "Expand Display, Change flat panel scaling Pick option 2 - Use NVIDIA scaling with fixed-aspect ratio" I have "3D settings", "Display" and "Video & TV" as options with "change resolution", "Adjust desktop color settings", "Rotate Display" and "set up multiple displays" as additional options under "Display"

Jay:

i had a similar problem recently... i had to go through and manually try about every setting before i got one to look right... iirc, i had to use a fixed aspect ratio and then mess with the refresh rates... i wouldn't have thought the refresh rate would have made any difference, but it did... so if you haven't tried playing with those settings, give them a try.

You can always play in windowed mode.  That will keep the aspect ratio right.

I have been using this program -> linky for years. It is $25.00USD for the pro version and I think it is well worth it. I just hit ALT-W and my screen goes to 1152 x 864 and then the windowed WitP fits real nice with room for the task bar on the bottom. The nice part is that the program remembers the location of all my desktop icons and puts them back in the right place when I exit WitP and hit ALT-N.

You may find the monitor itself may have "fixed ratio scaling" as well as "Full screen" and "1:1 display" options in its built in menus. Mine certainly does (which is great since my PC's ATI Catalyst video driver doesn't).

Reg.
