Spec for H3ANW Server

Post by iriyak »

Hi,

A question about H3ANW MP. I'm planning to setup H3ANW Server for domestic users. Intel M Processor 1.2GHz with 1Gb memory does meet the requirement for the server? Advanced Manual mentions 1.5 GHz or more would be recommended.
Multiplayer (MP) requires a server; we recommend a 1.5 GHz system with 256mb of RAM or better. Then you’ll need one or more clients.

The below is a screenshot of my note PC's System Property:

That machine will make an ok server. The single biggest improvement from what you have there would be a multi-core processor but again what you have will do fine. That your server will be in country is excellent since connection issues (high latency, slow connection, etc.) have a large impact on the stability of the game.

Thank you for your review and comment about connection issues!

Recently I happened to meet a player who have played Harpoon in his old mac before and I am trying to invite him to a world of H3ANW MP. He wished to have MP at that time. So now it is the time to play! [8D]

Harpoon 3 [ANW] scenarios for the PlayersDB

Post by hermanhum »

Just a word of caution. If you set up an MP server and decide to run the PlayersDB scenarios from it, the Axis of Evil II scenario may cause your server to crash from sheer size.

The only solution to this crash problem is to remove the scenario from the folder when you start up the Server. Once you are finished playing MP, you can replace it. The scenario runs in fine in Solitaire play.

Thank you for sharing the possible case to crash.

OK, I reproduced it. The server program freezed where a control of the mouse pointer didn't come back. In my second attempt nothing happened for a few minutes so just exited to the lobby and selected another scenario. And now I am playing without the server's hanging up or freezing.

But just in cases, I will temporarily move the scenario of Axis of Evil II before starting the server and put it back after shutting it down. A simple batch file takes care. So that's OK with me.[:)]

You might also want to check out these crashes from AGSI's List of Known ANW Issues:

[*]Crash server while starting MP game
Scenario and server will crash after 30 seconds
[*]Crash starting MP session
Scenario never finishes loading and crashes server

Thank you again for the possible cases to crash. Let me share my testing result in my environment with H3 ANW 3.9.4.0 & PDb July 1, 2009. The H3 ANW Server is running either on Windows XP Professional SP2 or SP3.

1. Crash server while starting MP game

Tried twice for each node out of two note PCs. Didn't reproduce it and survived for more than 30 seconds after advancing the clock. Note that there is one variance for .opt files: There is no "NoSubSpeedResumption.opt" in the field at the right, so this option is not enabled.

2. Scenario never finishes loading and crashes server

Tried twice and didn't reproduce it. Finished loading and started the clock without issue. Note that there is one variance for .opt files: There is no "NoSubSpeedResumption.opt" in the field at the right, so this option is not enabled.

"Axis of Evil II" seems to be the only scenario that is not running in my environment so far.

I'm almost finishing my setting up H3 ANW Server. Quite thrilling experience, indeed. [8D]

Most excellent.  I would be happy to come over and visit for a match when you have it all set up.
