it´s getting more and more boring again, most of the work to do for me is trying to disband high experienced fragments of air groups into the carrier based daitais... the battles in the Gilberts were a full success, far bigger victory than could have been expected. Mainly due to major Allied mistakes performing the evacuation of Allied troops on Makin. The enemy´s carrier force is shattered and I wonder how the game will go on. In two months the first land based Type 13 radar sets should be available, as well as the new IJNAAF short range fighters the Jack and the George. The George (range 4 hexes) will be needed to fend off Lightning escorted 4E bomber strikes while the Jack will be the IJAAF fighter for short range escort (range 6 hexes). Of course we will have to keep high experienced A6M3 daitais around to escort Frances bombers on long range strikes. More and more aircraft are ordered into our training bases and I´m experiencing severe problems to find bases where we can fly our training runs...

Baker Island is bombed daily now and it wouldn´t surprise me if bigbaba would try to take this base in a couple of months. This could be pulled off without heavy carrier support if the convoys get close without being spotted as it takes a couple of turns until KB could show up when coming out of the Marshalls...

550 of my aircraft are doing training runs near Vladivostok and another 650 near Manila. And there are still 250-350 more in need of training... if we would have lost the carrier engagement near the Gilberts than the Allied now would have the initiative because my carriers and a lot of my LBA would have been trashered. As it stands now, parts of my LBA has been knocked out (with enough in reserve to be a threat though), my carrier force will be in perfect shape in two weeks at the latest while the enemy has lost every possibility to do big style amphibious operations for the next 12 months IMO.

wonder if the enemy plans to keep up a prolonged air offensive in the North. It´s winter already so perhaps this could lead to some more losses within his bombers but I guess not... In any case, winter means an amphibious assault would be suicide and my bases are well garissoned anyway. Garisson numbers will be brought up until spring...

more troops surrender... all of the remaining enemy invaders will be knocked out soon... the Makin invasion (and evacuation) has cost the Allied not just hundreds of carrier based aircraft, nearly a dozen carriers, a couple of BBs and dozens of AKs, it has also cost them a couple of LCUs worth 400-500 victory points...

holy crap! My adjusted av is far from what I would expect while the Chinese adjusted av is also far higher than I would expect. The Chinese are starving, have nearly no guns left and still get a better adjusted av than most of my 5000+ av armies get when assaulting an Allied position. Explanation for our low adjusted av in this urban hex surely are the ongoing air to ground attacks by the British/Chinese fighter bombers that highly disrupted our troops here... looks like I have to take out the airfield sooner than later... a Chinese Army that is suddenly able to break out would be a major change in our strategic position...

Now some screenshots that could be of interest. Let´s start with the Allied CV losses. As you can see, 15 Allied CVs have been confirmed sunk so far, I don´t know if more went down that we didn´t get the confirmation yet, but I guess that should be all. The Allied CV/CVL losses don´t even fit into one screen anymore. LOL! Notice that we have sunk Saratoga and Enterprise twice already...

Five Essex class carriers sunk and also very important, four of the British carriers sunk. This will reduce the number of possible Corsairs over Allied CV TFs to only a couple of dozen.

The rest of the CV/CVL losses. 15 CVs and 5 CVLs being confirmed sunk so far, while CVL Hermes isn´t really worth mentioning...

And the CVEs that were all sunk during the Allied operation to supply Wyndham. Sinking CVEs is important but there will be coming so many of them out of the Allied shipyards that it will be quite hard for us as soon as there are enough around. 15 of those can form one CV TF (450 carrier based ac) per hex and they mostly carry fighters with only 9 torp bombers. This would mean that they can put up a huge Cap to cover amphibious operations while not being a real threat offensively. I don´t know if the CVE based FM-2s can be upgraded to Hellcats. I hope not of course... [:D]

And the Allied battlewaggons that have been sunk so far. A couple of damaged ones should be around too, I guess there are still two dozen BBs left for the Allied (without those that are still to come as reinforcements). We outperform the enemy´s carriers at the moment but can´t compete with the number of battleships, not to talk about the dozens of cruisers.

And here are the losses of IJN capitol ships! It made my smile a bit... [;)] I didn´t take screens of Allied cruisers lost but in total, some two dozen were lost. Both the two BBs lost and the heavy cruiser lost were "unfortunate" happenings. Hyuga was lost because of me being stupid and positioning my BBs within range of Karachi´s Swordfish, Mutsu moved just one hex short to be save when the enemy carriers also moved one hex closer than the turn before in the Gilberts and Haguro was hit by one torp off Darwin that detonated one of here main ammo magazins. CV Junyo was taken out by 9 x 1000lb GP bombs at the beginning of the carrier engagements near the Gilberts. It´s nevertheless nice to compare our losses so far to the Allied losses.

considering the number of flak guns at this base, the result is once again pathetic...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Makin , at 85,89 [X(][X(][X(]

Japanese aircraft
Ki-61 Ic x 88

Allied aircraft
B-17E Fortress x 36
B-24D Liberator x 117
B-24J Liberator x 44

Japanese aircraft losses

Japanese Ships
CVE Chuyo, Bomb hits 3, heavy damage

Japanese ground losses:
12 casualties reported

Port fuel hits 1
Port supply hits 1

Aircraft Attacking:
23 x B-24J Liberator bombing at 10000 feet
7 x B-17E Fortress bombing at 10000 feet
3 x B-24D Liberator bombing at 10000 feet

WOW! I was not surprised that bigbaba would send his 4Es to take out the ships that were disbanded at Makin but I was more than surprised about this strike. Of course we don´t even get 50% of our fighters into the air, they nevertheless perform really well. More than half of the bombers turned back (nearly no B-24D dropped their loads) but there were still 70+ bombers performing a low altitude carpet bombing run on my ships that were anchored near the atoll. CVE Chuyo was hit three times with 500lb bombs (the 4Es are coming from a level 4 airfield and are at extended range - so much for the myth that bombers wouldn´t attack from too small airfields at extended range) and I´ve thought during the attack that this could mean trouble for the CVE.

But what really strikes me is the number of bombers in this attack... hmm, perhaps it´s just my paranoia once again but if they are coming from a level 4 airfield than there are not more ac allowed than af size x 50 + 10% max, means 220 aircraft. Well, 197 bombers were coming in, leaves room for 23 spare aircraft. This would more or less mean that there shouldn´t be a lot of damaged bombers (from ongoing long range attacks the last weeks), nearly no fighters, nearly no patrols. I can´t prove it, but I highly doubt that the stacking rule applied for this base... 150 bombers wouldn´t make me suspiciously, 197 do...

a lot of bombers were shot down by our figthers and their morale surely is trashed now. Flak fire against the low incoming bombers was heavy, I´ve recently moved in three additional AA rgts. Against our expectations, we weren´t able to keep our port safe from unescorted bombers but I guess this is now the case.

As you can see, nearly 60 4Es were shot down today, that´s quite an achievement in Nikmod.

And that´s how my ships look like that are at Makin. At least one of the bomb hits on Chuyo this turn must have been FOW, probably even two of the three hits. We will have 8 DDs arriving tomorrow and either tomorrow or within the next three days our damaged ships will be escorted into a safe area. Means the only loss during the carrier engagement was Junyo for the sinking of 6 CVs, 3 CVLs (without counting the damage to the BBs). Note that the attack on the port resulted in 1000 op points for the ships... [&:]

after the 4E attack and looking at Chuyo´s damage I´m 98% sure to save her. Only very bad things happenig could see her sinking now. The enemy´s bomber morale was trashed and they can only show up unescorted so only newly transfered bomber squadrons could do the job but this takes time and it takes time to get the damaged bombers repaired, so they could move out to make room for the newly arriving ones (if bigbaba follows the stacking rules...)

All this takes time and I expect to move out the damaged ships within the next three days.

The only small chance for the Allied I see at the moment is trying to move on a base near PM (probably Gili Gili). But to be honest, with PM alone to fly LRCAP and trying to surpress all my airfields and setting bombers on nav attack to deal with KB, I can´t see much of a chance to pull off a succesful and ongoing offensive towards Rabaul. Not to talk about the fact that I still threat Australia with all the ground troops I´ve got there...

all units except a HQ have entered Irkutsk. I guess this is the biggest Japanese Army I have ever sent into combat. All our troops are fully prepped, fully combat ready and fully supplied. We have a 4:1 in av and all I can hope is that my eng will be able to take down the first two fort levels and that we will than achieve at least a 1:1 each time to bring down the forts. Everything will depend on the forts as the enemy has unlimited supply with thousands of supply points coming in as autosupply daily. Hopefully the Russian can´t build up a level 8 to level 9 fort in three days like the Western Allied are doing in Australia... [8|] I won´t give up until my units will be really worn down as they have enough time to recover if we won´t be able to take the base. They will also have enough time to recover if we will be able to take the base... [;)]

even if we have a 4:1 advantage in assault value, it may look easier than it will be. Level 9 forts and Allied fire power are a killer, not to mention the fact that Allied engineers build up a foxhole into a Maginot line defense during divisional sized combats within a couple of days. I´ve got more than a dozen eng rgts at Irkutsk and all my divs have all their combat eng ready but with the results in this PBEM so far, I don´t expect to take more than two fort levels down with my engineers, they will probably all be disabled after two attacks. This means we will then need to achieve a 1:1 at least to further take forts down. Our biggest advantage are our tanks which hopefully will inflict enough casualties within the defender to see the total casualties being on par. When we achieve this, we will also be able to take the town.
