WPO?

Post by Historiker »

Is it worth buying it?
I looked to me like a mod of witp. The same disadvanteges while the airforce and CVs are nearly useless in WPO. Consequently, I didn't buy it.

As it'll be cheaper for 90 days now, I'm thinking about buying it, but is it worth it?
Does someone still play it via PBEM (as vs. the AI will most likely still be useless)?
Are there good mods?
How is it compared with witp stocks?

I like WPO. Big ships, big guns, puny planes. Japan has a whole lot more challenges with China a virtual military desert, the land forces on both sides build up slowly 9although Japan starts with an advantage). The production system has been ripped out so you don't have to worry about that as Japan.

Scenario 1:

31 May 1922 - 31 December 1926

An entire four and a half year hypothetical war set in
1922 utilizing WWI era battleships and the beginnings of
naval aviation.

Assume control of either the Japanese or Allied armed
forces in a bid for control of the entire Pacific realm.

Under the guns of mighty dreadnoughts, which side will
reign supreme, and which will crumble in the face of the
most powerful naval vessels every constructed?

Scen 8:

War Plan Orange Campaign III "Never Weres"

31 May 1926 - 31 December 1930

An entire four and a half year hypothetical war set in
1926 combining WWI era battleships, naval aviation,
and the never were designs of the 1920s.

Assume control of either the Japanese or Allied armed
forces in a bid for control of the entire Pacific Basin.

Can you force a Jutland, or will your country starve
in a blockade?

This variant of Campaign II allows the use of "never"
never were designs, such as the 18inch South Dakota, Kii,
and G3 class capital ships

The turns are fast. Even doing the Grand campaign the turns are realitively fast. There are few aircraft units , and a lot less LCU's and bases. It's fast, simple and fun. WITP lite. SoSimon, care for a WPO short scenario? [:D]

Doesn't sound too bad.

Thank you!

I find WPO to be a good mod of WITP, with lots of its foibles.

I believe that some of the changes in WPO ASW became part of one of the WITP patches.

You get WITP standard Naval & Land combat, as mentioned air plays only a small role, most aircraft have a range of 1.

While it plays AI OK, maybe because of fewer units, it needs some Political Rules which you really need an PBEM opponent to make work.

I'm unsure what level you get when you buy, but get the mods which bring WPO to life and use AB's maps.  (It needs more work on the Land OOB)

I dont know what the cost is, but its a reasonably good game.

Is it still possible to find opponents? I only play PBEM, as even my dog is more clever than any A."I.".

On the other hand: With one week of work, it should be possible to turn witp into WPO, no?

One week of work? Don't let Tankerace and the playtesters hear you say that!

In fact, it's nothing but a witp with a different db, no?

I think you exaggerate, maybe 2 weeks work if you have all the books handy.[8D]

Especially vanilla WPO, which really only changed the naval db (lots of changes), air db (took out everything and replace about 20%) and land db (about the same as the air)

Later mods and scenarios brought it up to the quality I would have assumed vanilla would have started with, an annoying trend matrix seems to use regularly.

Well, I love the big guns, so I always thought about WPO. What repelled me each time was that it seemed rather like an additional scenario than like a stand alone game - which price it costs.
I now wonder, whether it is playable if you have witp AE in front of you. I wasn't able to play wtip vanilla any more ofter seeing CHS and RHS, so this might also happen with WPO.
Do the guys here who have it also still play it?
