Population bug

Post by Mus »

In the PBEM 109 game I got Denmark as a protectorate and then to keep the peace with Sweden I ceded Trondheim and Christiana (basically all of Norway) to Sweden.

However, I seem to still be getting "billed" for food, etc of the population in Norway. Check out this screenshot showing my "92 population" in reality the total population in provinces under my control is 84:

Edit:

The bottom note about the reported population circled in red should have read "and this effects all population related calculations."

Have you let a turn go by to make sure that it's updating improperly?  If it is, would you mind sending me zipped copies of the save file (ericbabe@west-civ.com)?

This is a PBEM game. Does that matter?

Files sent regardless. This is many turns after this, so no self adjustment has taken place. I counted again in the Turn 21 files I sent you and my total population plus Norway (under control of Sweden) is still equal to the total number of "men" displayed.

I have another game where I control Norway but I gave Jutland and Zealand to Sweden. In that one Im not "billed" for the population of Norway.

I think whoever is holding the capital of a multi-province entity is being counted as controlling all the population, in both cases here Denmark.

A similar issue is that countries dont seem to be getting the proper "empire points" of multi province countries that get split either. Either occupied or protectorates.

Does this explain my aversion to split entities in our 1792 territory negotiations barb?

The manual states that a for every conquered province a Country is to receive a bonus to their empire score of:

• +2 for every Conquered province (including those with which they
began the scenario

This does not appear to be getting calculated correctly with split entities either.

If I conquer only Malta or only Corfu or both as Great Britain and let another power take the rest of the entity they belong to (Papal States and Venetia respectively) I dont receive any credit for conquering these 2 provinces (should be +4 for 2 conquered provinces).

Again as with the population bug, the points go to who holds the capitol of the entity, not the holder of the actual provinces.

Also see my post here: tm.asp?m=2185150

Weird things going on with Empire score calculation beyond this.

May not be directly related but I have issues with the bottom info updating sometimes.  That is why Eric asked if a turn had passed.  This doesn't appear to happen to many people as not many people have mentioned it but it does happen thus wonder if it's just a refresh issue with the bar.

Protectorates are only worth one empire point, regardless of how many provinces, by design.

I turned off the frequent refresh of this bar as it was leading to the lag problems some people were experiencing. I then tried to find all the important places to refresh the bar (like when you open and close sub-screens, and give certain orders) -- but I probably did not find them all.

It's only +1 for provinces that were originally minor powers; +2 for conquered provinces that were originally major powers. I looked over the empire code, and it all looks correct. May be some documentation ellipses.

I think I found the bug with the population problem.  Because Denmark seems to be a protectorate of Britain, provinces that are home provinces of Denmark are being counted toward Britain's population regardless of their current owner.

I am going to take a look at some saved games then and get back to you on what I see. I still think I am not receiving empire point credit in situations with split entities. Similar to the population bug, I think the game is looking at who is holding the capital and then crediting that party only.

Also, what is the definition of conquered? Is a province ceded to me by treaty considered conquered for the purpose of empire point calculation?

For example, in the screenshot given above, I should be getting +1 for having Denmark as a protectorate. Should Sweden be getting +2 for having the 2 northern provinces under his control or are they not considered conquered.

This would make it really easy to look at saved games pre and post and see if it adjusted correctly.

Eric is it +1 for the protectorate and then an additional +1 for every province in the protectorate because they are now "conquered minor" provinces?

At this point I think its working, I am more asking how its supposed to work.

Check out these screenshots:

This one is from before Denmark became a British protectorate. This is from the same PBEM game I sent you the files for on the Pop bug issue.

This one is from after Denmark became a British protectorate, and giving me 5 more provinces that are now "conquered" territories and I take it now that "conquered" means held in any form?

This is also before the "Trondheim Accord" in which I ceded the 2 Northern provinces:

My empire score increases by +6, +1 for forming a protectorate and +5 for five conquered provinces.

And this is after the Trondheim Accord is passed, ceding the 2 provinces. My Empire score goes down by two, Sweden's score goes up by two:

So I guess as long as provinces held in a protectorate are supposed to count as conquered everything is working OK with empire calculation as far as this situation is concerned. I still dont understand how I took a -4 hit to my Empire score in the other game.
