Fatal error when ALT+TAB on window mode

Game drops to desktop with no messages when ALT+TAB from windowed mode.

Problem repeats 100% when ALT+TAB from windowed mode during turn resolution. Less likely (say 20% chance) when ALT+TAB after turn is resolving and waiting orders.

This is an old problem (it happened on WITP too), but makes windowed mode almost unusable (I stopped using it after half a dozen drops). Running game with -dual -w; system has DirectX 9.0c; ATI Radeon X1950; Catalyst drivers 9.3 (bit old, but there are no newer drivers for this card).

Problem does not happen when ALT+TABbing from full screen, btw.

Is there a reason you use ALT+TAB? I just use the minimize button with no problems.

Oh, that's a good idea. I'll try that.

I use ALT+TAB as a shortcut to go straight to Word for my annotations, then ALT+SHIFT+TAB to get back to game (I'm faster with keyboard than with mouse clicks). But if minimize or click on the taskbar work, that will work just as well.

Post a DxDiag please. I can't duplicate this here, so I'm assuming this is somehow related to your hardware or drivers. As suggested above though, you can also just click on other apps or minimize when in windowed mode.

This is the DxDiag output, but I'd recommend to not waste time with it. I'm using the taskbar to click to other apps and I'm not switching to other apps while the turn is running, and with these precautions I got no errors during the last 4 hours. So I'd call that worked-around.
