How do you tell what part of the arc you are searching?

Post by Tanaka »

Could someone explain how to set this in a little more detail? For instance if you set 280 and 90 will it search the upper half of the circle or the lower half?

Seems like it would be easier to tell if the actual arc you set showed up on the map?

It searches clockwise . . . 280 to 90 is upper half (well, more precisely, 270 to 90 is upper half) [;)]

Compass rose is in the upper right of map...

Straight out of the top of the hex is 0

1st hexside (NE)= 30

1st Hexside border NE is 60

2nd hexside (E) 90

2nd border -120

3rd hexside (SE) 150

Bottom 180

4th hexside (SW) 210

4th hexside border =240

5th hexside (W)= 270

5th border = 300

Ok so forgive me I failed geometry but if 270 to 90 is the the upper half then is 90 to 270 the lower half?

You can always set your search arc by the map too.

Tanaka: yes. It goes clockwise. 270 to 90 means you search north; 90 to 270 means you search south. I asked the same question earlier.

Erik: I like using the map to define arcs, but even that method doesn't make crystal-clear that searches are conducted clockwise. E.g., if you choose a point to the east, and then a point to the west, you still need to know that the search craft will proceed clockwise from the first point (the easternmost one) to the second point (the western one), thus searching south.

Or does 0 to 350 cover the whole circle and 350 to 350 only cover ten degrees?

should be 0 to 0 for entire circle, but it looks like you can set any number to any number if it's the same # and probably get a full 360 degrees

I had a question in the 6th grade the teacher asked "If you want 360 degrees with your protractor what do you do?" well you flip it over and continue the circle for the whole 360 degrees. :)

0 is North
90 is East
180 is South
270 is West

Use a compass best way I think or just fix it in your head 0 is north 90 is direct east so 180 is south so 270 is direct west (yes it breaks the math in relative turns a bit) it goes in 30's. You will get the hang of it either way... damn a game that teaches also

I finally figured it out, by using the map, BUT the cardinal directions are just a device to set the arcs. Because of the projection, North isn't North except for one hex column on the map. The distortion will get worse as you travel closer to the map edges.

Thanks for these answers!

Am I right in assuming that *not* setting a search arc results in a full 360 degree search?

I didn't see this in the manual (but it could be there), but I found out that the easiest method to set the search zone is to use the "Use Map" method.

When you get into the Patrol Level screen...where you can set the search radius, you will see 3 buttons: The top one will be the left edge...the middle one is the right edge....and the bottom one says "use map". If you click on the "use map" button, it will take you to the map. Once on the map, LEFT click near where you want the left edge of the search zone to be....then RIGHT click where you want to right edge of the search zone to be. The game will then return to the Patrol Level Screen and you will notice that the top and middle buttons will now have your arc set.
