hmm. no luck there. My four year old pentium 4 notebook ran the WITP better than this can run AE - Very vexing.

Ok, your current video driver is fairly old (for Vista). I would recommend trying the latest one direct from the www.nvidia.com site. They have drivers that work fine for GeForce 9600M(obility) cards like yours.

Your audio driver should be ok.

Also, some general suggestions, since lag like that is often indicative of something else using up CPU cycles.

1. Have you turned off all other background programs to make sure nothing else could be interfering? If something is using up a lot of CPU cycles, that could slow things down to this point. If you're not sure, try "Enditall" before you run WITP AE. http://www.docsdownloads.com/enditall-1.htm

2. Is your video driver set entirely to default settings or are any non-default options turned on/forced on? Can you reset it to defaults? If you're not sure, might be worth trying to uninstall and reinstall the latest drivers from www.nvidia.com

3. Can you try going into DxDiag and gradually reducing your Video and Audio acceleration, then trying to launch the game again to see if any of those settings make any difference?

As far as the lag that happens after a new turn starts: -dual doesnt help that at all.
Like I said saving and then exiting and then starting up the game and reloading clears it so its not a major thing.

I using an HP Pavilion dv5 notebook with Vista 64x. It appears to exceed all the requirements (2.5ghz centrino 2 and 4 gigs of ram). For some reason, the game runs noticably slowly when playing. For example, there are delays when clicking on menus etc... I did not have this problem with the orignal WITP and higher end games seem to run a bit better.

Does anyone know what (if anything) I should do?

I'd recommend that you try some basic PC maintenance. AE has a lot of additional artwork that must be accessed on the disk and anything that slows down disk access will slow down the game. If this is what you are experiencing, you might notice certain circumstances - like when the game needs to find and display different ship or aircraft artwork or has to redisplay the map and various icons.

1. If you have anti-virus software running, consider disabling it. Otherwise each and every disk access has to be scanned and checked.

2. De-fragment your disks. Always a good idea.

3. Clean up your disks (delete or archive stuff if you can). Nearly-full disks cause rapid fragmentation and lots of head movement.

4. If you are comfortable with it, empty the Recycle Bin frequently.

5. Check what's running in background. Some programs come up and run on their own schedule - downloading updates, idle-time defragmentation or virus scan, anything. Use your Task Manager to determine if a resource hog is competing with the game.

6. Reboot now and again. Rebooting is known to help with graphics issues too. Memory and various other system resources get fragmented and sometimes "lost" when a probram aborts and does not properly free them.

7. And, only half-facetiously, run the game on a different computer that is not connected to the web. If you do happen to have an older system that can be run stand-alone you can cull massive amounts of junk from it and just the the game.

Yes, Don., I notice sluggish performance when I'm adding ships to TFs, cycling through menus and different ships, aircraft, land units etc.

It's pretty late where I am, so I'll have to perform these tasks tomorrow morning. I'll let you know if it works.

One other thing, do you modify video and audio acceleration from the nvidea control panel?

I'm having a similar problem. After loading the initial saved game, it takes up to 5 seconds for a base to come up when clicking a hex on the map. Never had this problem with WitP. I'm running full-screen.

One more suggestion for anyone having issues with this, is check with your motherboard manufacturer for updated chipset drivers. Sometimes things like this can be caused by issues with dual core chipsets.

Your sound drivers are from 2003 [X(]! Please update those first (SB Audigy) and see if that resolves the issue. If that doesn't work, update your video drivers (from 2008) as well from www.ati.com for your Radeon X1950 Pro card.

I don;t know if it is applicable, but have you tried changing the program compatibility to XP on the Vista shortcut.

I had some weird problems on my Vista machine with the Tiller's Campaign games until I change the setting to XP (and something else).
Then they worked like a charm.

After ending turn processed (at start of next turn) - actual memory use 700mb, page file use about 1gb. And it stays at those levels until you save, exit then reload the turn.

Just FYI, from another thread:

"Turning off all video acceleration options (DirectDraw acceleration, Direct3D acceleration, and AGP Texture acceleration) in dxdiag fixes the problem. Scrolling is fast and smooth, and I get near-immediate response to clicking on bases, TFs etc. That's a bit bizarre really, but as long as it works..."

Interested to know if this helps the people reporting lag here.
