PBEM Players, the new Pavlov's Dogs

Post by Toast Master »

I'm pitiful! I've played more games of minesweeper, hearts and solitaire this weekend than I have in my entire life! I need something else to do while waiting for my PBEM opponent's turns to arrive.

Also, even though my email settings are configured to check for messages every 2 minutes, I still find myself clicking the "Send/Receive" button like a cocaine-addicted lab rat pulling down the little lever that delivers its "fix". Then I hear the bell and feel the adrenaline rush. It's here at last! No, that was the microwave, telling me my coffee is reheated. Another bell, another adrenaline rush. No, that’s the doorbell. I forgot I ordered a hoagie for delivery. A third bell, and a third conditioned response. (I think my adrenals must be close to empty by now. :D) Aha! That one came from the computer. After unzipping the game file, saving and reloading, I am reminded that today is Overcast. I click past the weather window and watch the action unfold.

Drat! Two Betty's shot down by CAP in a night raid of Port Moresby. But I finally paste that da**ed sub patrolling my harbor at Lunga with 4 depth charges! And sweet! I nail another one of those S-boats with a mine as it tries to enter Noumea! :p

This game, which is fantastic when played against the AI, is even better when played against a human opponent. For anyone out there who has never played UV by email I have two words - Do It. Check the "Opponents Wanted" section of the forum and give it a try. You'll be glad you did. I myself never played a single computer game against a human opponent until this weekend. (And I've been playing for 10+ years.) Now, I find it difficult to continue those saved games I started against the AI!

If the biscuit has my opponent's next turn attached, I guess I can be nice.:D

Filling up the dead time

You could always spend the time waiting for the turn to come in, playing against the AI.

If you're afraid you'll get the games messed up, just play the other game as the Allies.

It's not quite as interesting to play against the AI now that I'm playing PBEM games. It is useful though to start a game against the AI and take my human opponent's side in that game. That way, I can get a rough idea of when his new units arrive. (That's not considered cheating, is it? I suppose it could be looked upon as simply using all of one's available resources. :p )

No I would consider that cheating;)

Just kidding. If you play often enough as both sides, you can have an idea when the reinforcements arive anyway.

I can certainly identify with that. One Sunday I played 145 games of free cell waiting for turns to come. So I got another two opponents and now my time is more filled with UV than waiting. In fact when I get home from work it takes me a couple hours to return all the turns I have waiting for me.

I too find it difficult to go back to playing the AI campaigns I have started.

:)

AI becomes predictable. It is hard to go back to once I played PBEM. W/ Human opponent I get the element of suprise (sometimes unpleasant).

Like sending the Shoho after a carrier you think can't launch aircraft?:p
