Coral Sea

Playing the Allies against the AI, I haven't been able to win in 12 tries. If I go after the assault shipping, the 5th Air Division bottles me up and takes advantage of my hopeless search to mousetrap me. That initial Japanese attack is overwhelming. Has anyone been able to win with the Allies?

Despite my total incompetence, I got a marginal victory, despite losing all of my ships. The idea is to cripple the invasion fleet so they won't have enough to take Port Morsby. The key is not the Japanese carrier fleets but the invasion fleet.

Put your 2 CV fleets close to each other headed NW with 50% on CAP and float planes from all fleets and ground planes searching E and NE to catch the invasion fleet when they sail around the bottom of the peninsula to get to Port Moresby. Send your surface fleet near Port Moresby, using the CV fleets for cover. If you are lucky, you will catch the invasion fleet before the Jap carriers wipe you out, and you will get a marginal victory.

Good luck.

I actually had a 100 percent historical result.  The second day, I jumped the Shoho task force and sunk her.  On the fourth day, as my carriers were smashing (and repelling) the invasion force, Shokaku and Zuikaku snuck up on me from due east and crippled Lexington, which sunk two days later.  I ended up with a decisive allied victory.

Playing for the very first time, by some miracle I won a marginal victory by focusing my attack on the Japansese Landing Force. I did lose one carrier, and the other one was heavily damaged but made it to port. All of my other ships were pretty much destroyed. (Maybe one or two destroyers survived.) The Japansese invasion force never reached Port Moresby. The one big mistake I made was moving my carrier fleets within range of the bombers at Rabaul, so be careful of that.

Well playing as the Japanese vs BLurking I just got my clock cleaned by 1,000lbers courtesy of the USN. My carriers are untouched but my invasion force is in doubt. I split of Aoba,Furutaka,Kinugasa and Kako to sneak in and shell PM after my initial lightweight bombardment mission went in. They didn't make it in undetected and uncontested. My land based Zero's flying CAP didn't show and the Nells and Bettys only talk a good game.

Basically a good, short and fun scenario vs a human at least. Just don't try and get too cute or make sure you brought the bigger club to the party. Seems here i brought a knife to a gunfight.
