North is only North on one hex column on the map??
Is this true? If so, how are we to set our search arcs when we don't know where North is?
However, it seems to me that the search arcs are set based on North being the top of the map; no matter which hex row the unit is in.
Which is it? Inquireing minds want to know.

For game purposes, north is always up.
Some people are overthinking things and are applying real world curvature of the earth conditions to a flat map.

Hey-weren't there whole mod teams devoted to this kind of thing back in the day?

I think what charboiled is trying to say is that it was just easier to say North is always up, otherwise you are just making an already complicated game more complicated.

This AE map is Aussocentric. That is, down is north. So if you're standing in a hex and facing down, that's north. East is west. West is east. And north is south. 90 degrees is east. 180 degrees is south. 270 degrees is west. However, in extreme weather where the ship's chronometer is thrown off kilter, 270 degrees may actually equate to 45 degrees. In areas of magnetic resonance, the compass is inverted so that north is north and south is south.

It’s an azimuthal equidistant spectral projection of Polaris, with corrections for annual aberration in right ascension and declination. Some thought given to orthographic oblique from the galactic axis, but the event horizon of the singularity in the core got in the way.ORIGINAL: FAsea

Basically, ‘0’ is ‘up’, ‘180’ is ‘down’; give or take; except on alternate Thursdays and leap year.

In all seriousness how is down north in AE?Isnt the Arctic on the top of the map?

The Arctic is at the top only if you're standing with your eyes on the zenith-facing horizon. If you turn your back to the front and keep you eyes at dead-level, taking care to keep the horizon both hoizontal and spherical, then the Arctic should be a 179 degrees true. Then you're correctly positioned to read and apply the AE map. In that instance, the Artic is down, or due north, with the Galopogos Islands at 68 degrees or true east-east-northeast-by-eastnortheast. The lee, or port side, of any ship will then be correctly oriented to make passage through the Straits of Magellan.

Yes, but only over gravitic anamalies, the site of Atlantis, secret underwater alien bases, and where toilets flush clockwise. I think those have been taken into account, but Atlantis and the secret alien bases had to be guessed at (they move around a lot). So, in accord with game philosophy, up (or down) is subject to a random calculation. [:D]ORIGINAL: Canoerebel

So, just don't flush the toilets and everything's cool.

Good! You have the declination taken into account, you have clearly done your homework! But don't forget about astral phenomena, seasonal occlusion, and atmospheric variance when shooting your fixes!

We're just having fun. In all seriousness, North is "up". 0 on the patrol chart is "up".ORIGINAL: V22 Osprey

OK so North is "up". I have that.
But who is to say which way is "up" and which is "down"? If we define "up" as the opposite direction of the gravitational force vector, what happens if I tilt my monitor?

Okay, you think you got me, don't you? Well, it's a scalar, not a vector.ORIGINAL: Cap Mandrake
