Ship Building Idea

Post by Shark7 »

Mostly for Japan.

Some ships were laid down before the war or in the early victorious stages (think Shinano, Ibuki) but as the war progressed they were altered on the slips to become another type of ship completely. What I'm getting at here is that on Dec 7, no one knew these ships would be needed as carriers.

I'm just wondering would it be possible to bring in these hulls with no guns, 0 move and have conversion options that take effect within 1-2 days of the arrival. The player could then convert to which he wants to build, either the Shinano BB or the Shinano carrier for example. Obviously they would be brought in on the date laid down. For the AI, you simply set an upgrade to the ship it turned into, but it would give a player a small window to make the choice.

Thoughts? Possible? Comments?

In WitP it is possible to upgrade anything to anything. You can "upgrade" a SC to a BB (it has to be defined in the editor). my impression is that that will work in AE as well. There you have the additional possiblity of conversion, which you need if you want a choice. You then also has to include the necessary airgroups as well. The editor is to my mind one of the more interesting aspects of the game

Bringing in a hull at the date laid down and then doing a conversion is a bad idea. This is a because we cannot charge shipbuilding points for conversions, so the ship will simply sit in port for x months and do nothing.

If we had been able to charge shipbuilding points for conversion/upgrade, this would have been fine. We cant, and as far as I know, that isnt going to change. (Until Witp 2....)

Bringing in a hull at the date the ship was comissioned and then converting works fine, except you have to have an arbitary cost to cover both possible conversion options, and theres the fact that you can wait until it arrives to decide what it is - more than a little gamey, as the whole fun of planning a construction program is not knowing whats gonna be needed.

The only solution I see is to remove the 'large' CV/BB/CA? hulls from the production system, and reduce naval yards proportionally. That have these arrive as 1 durability hulls (which also means no accelerating....well, a month a most), which then are built through the conversion.

So Shinano might arrive at the start of the game, as she was already laid down, and you can convert her to a BB or CV design.

Even better, you could do the following;

Get a 25% Shinano hull at the start;
-Option to convert to proper CVB design -> Due in late 44
-Option to continue as BB -> 60% hull due end of 42

At the end of 42 if you continued it as a BB, the 60% hull can;
-Option to convert to historical CV design -> due late 44
-Option to continue as BB -> due early 44

The quality of the CV (airgroup size ect) depends on when you converted it, to represent the difficulties of efficiently converting a semi complete battleship hull.

This principal can be extended to other ships, I think the following is good;
Dec 41 : 1 25% Yamato hull = CVB or BB -> CV or BB (late 42, only if BB in first)
Dec 41 : 2 'Liner' hulls = CV or AMC or APA
Dec 41 : 1 'Taiho' hull = Armoured CV or Normal CV
Mid 42 : 2 'Ibuki' hulls = CVL or CA -> CVL or CA (early 43, only if CA in first)
Late 42 : 4 'Medium' hulls = Unryu CV or B-65 CB
Late 43 : 2 'Medium' hulls = Unryu CV or B-65 CB

Something like that.

The drawback is ofcourse, you get these ships regardless of how badly you mess your economy up

Two ways to solve this:

1. Remove enough HI, ressources and oil from the map to simulate the building. Unfortunately, the ressources and oil don't have to be transported than and all these installations can't be bombed.

2. and that's what I'm planning with, now is:
A combination of House Rules and options for the Allies as well. One may allow the allied player to recieve more of his CLs as CVLs, he may also convert more AKs and TKs to CVE. If the Japanese player has the freedom of choice, this has to be reflected somewhen by the allies.
Without any doubt: I am the spawn of evil - and the Bavarian Beer Monster (BBM)!

There's only one bad word and that's taxes. If any other word is good enough for sailors; it's good enough for you. - Ron Swanson
