A Vow of Celibacy

Post by Canoerebel »

Dear Diary,

It's day 116 of my celibacy - 116 days since my last WitP game terminated. I had then taken a vow to go at least 180 days without playing WitP and AE in order to regain control of my life. I figured six months was long enough to evaluate whether life without this gaming "narcotic" was preferable to life with it.

I purchased AE on the day of release and have thus far not engaged in any PBEM games, thus keeping my vow intact (at least temporarily). I have been dabbling with some games against the AI, and I need to ask a question:

How the HECK does anyone play games against the AI?

The AE AI is vastly improved, and playing against the AI allows folks to check for playability, determine bugs, and to become familiar with the game. Those are some of the reasons I started playing, but I'm sorry, it just aint fun. When facing a cagey human opponent, every little aspect of the game becomes highly entertaining - setting search arcs, issuing orders to a gazillion subs, land units, and bases, enduring months of punishment as the Allied player. But against the AI, these details become unbearably odious.

I've about given up playing against the AI. I need a human opponent BAD. But I need to honor my vow. Which need will prevail?

I prefer the AI over human, it would be different if the Human played at my pace or it didnt take a year or more to finish a game.

The AI plays whenever I tell it to, human's are not reliable sources for this they play as they wish and sometimes not at all for so many reasons it is not worth listing.

The AI is fine it is fun humans in my experience are unreliable and/or simply have things they have to do and can't play.

I don't see how you guys play PBEM not the GC maybe small campaign but GC no way would I invest that time into the fickleness of a human player. A turn a day? Maybe a few more for a couple months then more often then not they are gone and the game is left unfinished and not even really started.

Bah, games against the AI are intolerable. You need to find a reliable and clever opponent. Man, there's nothing like it.

On the other hand, I have played against one person for over a year now and we have become good friends and are going to start a PBEM with the GC soon (doing Guadacanal now). We typically get in two turns a day and with AE, we are going to do two day turns. Playing the AI is like kissing your sister...it is a kiss but she is your sister!

Yeah but you guys are the exception not the rule.

But whatever people like. I do enjoy some of the AAR's for PBEM.

I like the pace of playing against the AI. Game turns are resolved quicker and I can complete the campaign scenerio in a more reasonable timeframe. Also, more importantly it gives me more control over my gaming. HOWEVER, I do understand that I'm losing a more competant opponent. Overall, I'm happy with the trade-off. [8D]

The Parable of the Blow Up Doll

Post by Canoerebel »

There were two brothers; one married to a woman he considered the most beautiful, alluring, and enticing woman in the world, the other dating a plastic blow-up "companion." The first brother was thrilled with every aspect of his marriage and tried to talk his brother into finding a mate. His brother, however, demurred, saying, "Ah, I like the pace of life with my plastic companion; I can 'play' with her whenever I like; I don't have to worry about her wandering off with another man."

I've been playing scenarios vs. AI and PBEM since release. The PBEM games are far more fun. Like canoerebel said, every little detail really seems to be more fun playing PBEM.

It will probabably be a few months before I try the GC over PBEM but I'm looking forward to it!
Although I like what I hear about the AI in the GC, they seem ruthless!
Have fun with the AI canoerebel

I generally love to play against humans. I've done it many times in TOAW. However, I am afraid of doing it in WitP. The game is so massive that the players commit for at least a year. I would be very disappointed if my opponent left the game before the end. On the other hand, life and work can legitimately come in between. The good AI is my main reason for buying AE. So far I am not disappointed.

Yes but the first brother lost all control gave up his fun to demands and a ball and chain and never knows if she will be there tomorrow. At least the doll doesn't get drunk and BONZAI Pearl Harbor (well wouldn't surprise me with the new Doll) or vanish one night and never come back not even a note.

The married brother had three years with his alluring wife - three years of snuggling, passion, and intimacy - before she lost six carriers in a massive engagement and suddenly disappeared into the night. He was heartbroken, but man, what a ride it had been! The other brother had three years with his blow up doll. Three years of unfulfilled desire, feverish nightmares of unrequitted love, and plastic burns. After his brother's wife ran away, he secretly rejoiced over his blow up doll. Meanwhile, his brother met this fabulous blonde at a church social, and began another torrid relationship...

Which brother would YOU want to be?

I don't know if ChezDaJez is going to like thinking of our three years of gaming as "snuggling, passion and intimacy"... [:'(]
