Strategic Bombing

Post by dplummer »

Playin game as both sides noticing strat bombing sems too effective. Using Brit initial strat bombing air army I've flown 11 missions. All at column -4 and results of:
pp losses inflicted - strat loss taken
1 -
3 -
2 -
5 -
1 -
4 -
3 -
5 -
3 - 1
2 -
5 -

Allowing for 1 week to repair 1 point loss that's 81 pp damage for 1 strat bomb point or 31 pp points new cost / strat bomber point.

Seems too effective by far as in essence I'm flying bombers through the heart of Germany with no real concern for losses. Perhaps the adjustments to the air losses for air-to-ground (which I like) are making strat bombing too easy?

It might be a late war situation because early on its not that bad. The strategic bombers are expensive and replacing 1 or 2 seems like a big cost but I guess when you have air superiority things might get out of whack in the late game.

It is surely an interesting observation but everything is relative. It is perhaps a bit hasty to conclude without seing the whole game in perspective. I haven't finished a campaign yet so I do not know how this fit in in the overall picture. Anyway, I guess the developers might find it interesting since the real test of the game only can be done after its release by war junkies like us[;)]

Very good comment dplummer. Maybe Tordenskiold is right and it makes sense in the big picture. But in a recent PBEM against gwgardner, he reduced German cities at will with British bombers in early 1939 while commenting that he is surprised at not suffering any losses for many turns. That is with the Axis having all own defensive aircraft almost suffocating the space around the target cities. For early 1939 that is quite some bombing by the Brits. (Hey, I know I am biased here)

A fatal error of Avalon Hill's Third Reich game was that the Allied Strategic Bombing campaign could never be effective enough to reduce Germany's PP levels to historical 1944 levels. The primary reason was because Strat Bombers cost too much for the Allies to build.

Anyway, in AH 3R, Germany could grow into this 1944 PP wealthy superpower.

ToW should not repeat this design mistake. (i'm not saying it has . .. i'm just sayin)

Just browsing this forum. If that's all there was to the problem, couldn't you just agree to lower the purchase cost? [&:]
