Land Ownership

Post by Joram »

I'm somewhat concerned land ownership is either bugged or just not functioning in what I think is an optimal way. Take a look at this picture and see two things. First, Bulgaria seems to own (almost) all of Greece. I know Athens is German and Iraklion but in this zoomed out view, it's obvious all the rest is bulgarian. I think it is because my German troops advanced from Bulgaria. So is Bulgaria getting all the rest of the PPs?

Secondly, look at Romania and how it's territory has extended all through southern Russia. Again, it's really my German troops which are extending this onward but again worried about the PP's, I'm tempted to stop my southern advance completely and bring a unit or two to swing down from the 'German' territory. Is this the way it's really supposed to be working or is something bugged here? Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Romanians or Hungarians(edit - oops, I mean Bulgarians!) but I, the Germans, am doing all the work!

I think that's a bit odd too. I invaded Yugoslavia from Germany and from Hungary and Belgrade ended up going to the Hungarians. While the rest of Yugo went to Germany (I had realized by then that I needed to capture the PPs with the troops from Germany).

Well, that's the thing, in these cases it is primarily german troops leading the way. In Yugoslavia I let Italy due a lot of the work but in Greece it was all German advance and in southern russia it is all german too. So I don't understand why the ownership is not german except for the fact that my german troops started off in Romanian/Bulgarian territory.

I had the same thing happen when I invaded Greece. The thing is I invaded with German troops only, no Italians or other minors. But the German troops that advanced out of Italian-held Albania extended the Italian held hex border.

It happens with several of my German units that tread close to slovakia. After the Polish campaign they usually pick up some territory from Poland .The German units give land to the Chechs. I try not to fret over it much but its probably a bug. I have seen it happen with Italy and a few other countries

That's how the game works. It does not matter who's unit conquers the land, land control depends only on what nations land is expanded or where the unit comes out of. This can be highly annoying at times (e.g. in a past PBEM I landed US troops in friendly Portugal for re-conquereing Europe and I had to do some tricks to not have all of Europe end up Portugese which would have been undesirable)

But at the same time the rule can be very useful (e.g. if you have a Slovakian unit come out of Prussia and enter the SU the control is still German and not Slovakian.)

Once you know it you can plan for it and manage it (most of the time). I am playing it wrong fairly often and hence feel for you.

IMHO the land should always go to Germany, USSR, or Britain, regardless who the other members of their alliance are. Since all members of an alliance can share supply, land control is not material for supply purposes. And I simply can't believe that Hitler or Stalin would allow any of their "friends" to take over precious PPs that the major nations could use to produce quality units. In the case of the western Allies, Britain is the junior partner once the USA enters, but the USA should not be able to take over land in Europe simply because it's not practicable to ship resources back to the USA so they can be put to use there.

I suggest a slight rewording... land should always go to the largest PP member (with the exception of the USA which can never gain territory) of an alliance or, if no alliance, to the independent country.

This allows, for instance, Finland to keep territorial gains. [:)]

Hmm, not sure if it's a great solution but I think better than what it is doing now.  Any comments from the developers?

Certainly we hear you. As the issue was mentioned we are trying to figure out what can be done.
