FYI: -dual switch with older Intel processors

Post by Rainer »

Just for information for those who have the older Intel Processor (Pentium 4) with "pseudo" dual capabilities -

Loading a save file WITHOUT -dual: 45 seconds
Loading the same save file WITH -dual: 5 seconds

May be worth a try. Certainly can't hurt.

Just remember: the switch has to be applied to the SHORTCUT of the exe file (if no shortcut exists create one by right clicking on "War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe", then edit the properties of the shortcut).

The line in the shortcut properties should look like this
"J:\Matrix Games\War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -dual
NOTE: substitute J:\ with the drive where AE is on your system. The -dual switch MUST be outside the quotes, and the quotes MUST be there.

Of course, you can add more switches like -w -altFont (see WhatsNew.pdf). Order of switches doesn't matter.

Cheers
Rainer

PS: The initial load seems to be unaffected by the switch.

We're working on some new command line switches to fix dual core issues even better.  There are two issues, one appears to affect Intel processors only and the other is related to graphics card drivers, but hits both ATI and Nvidia as well as both processor brands.

We have fixes in test for both that look like they will improve life for players.

I volunteer for pre- or beta testing.
However, my gear is fairly old (presumably in use by a lot of people).

Proc: Intel Pentium 4 Northwood 3 GHz 1 Core 2 Threads
2 GB DDR RAM
WinXP and Win7 RC
Nvidia 7600GT

My qualification:
Master Degree in CompSc. Fairly familiar with MS SW/MS OS (25+ years)
Very thorough back up system/strategy
PacWar since 1995
WitP since the day it came out
WitP/AE since I received it (the day before yesterday)
Lots of time (retired)

Seriously, let me know if I can help.

Joe Wilkerson handles applications for play testers.  Send him a PM with your qualifications.  I believe we might be adding one or two play testers for work with the patches.  Some fresh sets of eyes so to speak.
