1500 points each. March '44

German defending south road and woods.

((((((((((((((((((((

I imagined the scenario I was dealt as the counterpunch of a retreating decimated Pz Divison.

"Aufklaarung Counter 44"

___
===

March 4 1944

X D.Pz
Oberst Spellir commanding.

----
Situation as of 12:40PM.

After being routed, most of division destroyed.

Operations Stabff nowhere to be found. Myself and Major Befel the only Command officers left; and a Major Schmet recently in charge of what remains of regimental artillery.

Once the withdrawal affored time and space, I re assembled two makeshift KGs: mine and Maj Befel's.

Seeing as there was nowhere left to retreat to (marshes to south west [off map]) and seeing a summit, with Divisional Stab's MG Kompanie stranded there --and knowing the Soviets had to proceed down the only road through the marshes-- I decided to mount a counter attack: I hold the only road off that plateau through the marshes.

The plan was to sweep around south-east and occupy the summit plateu denying it to the advancing soviet armour so that korp command could retake the entire area unmolested.

I took all the Aufkl and most Pioniers in my KG and swept around to link up with Stab MG komp near the summit.

I ordered Maj Befel's KG to dig in in place to my north west [off Map] and protect my north flank. Ultimately he would draw fire from the advancing Soviets that I --being deployed on the summit --would be able to decisively respond to.

I ordered Schmet's Artillery, which was far ahead into the Southwest marshes --busily bogging itself in-- to deploy for fire missions.

---------
Divisional Assets:

..Most of Shutzen Regiment anihilated.

..Most Panzers destroyed.

..Most Pz Jg destroyed.

..Much of artillery rgt captured.

..Stab and Nachrichten etc unaccounted for.

..Remaining, under my control--

-Auflk elements --including light tanks

-Combat Engineers

-Pltn Pz IVG

..Some Haubitz (contingent on Schmet)

..Remaining, in summit area, when I arrived there--

-Stab's Maschinen Geweher company (w/ PzShrk)

-Some Mortars

-remnant one Pz Gren Kompanie --unmounted

-PzV(Panther) (recovered)

..Remaining, under Maj Befel (to my north)--

-Combat Engineers

-Pltn PzIV

-PzJg

____________
~~~~~~~~~~~~
________________
::::::::::::::::
Action at 1:10PM.
[Map 0+1]
When my KG arrived at the summit's vicinity, it was _already_ being occupied by Soviet SP artillery! Radio link with Stab's MG komp dug in due west of summit informed me there were pltns of T-70 and British mediums assembling, along with some Inf and medium ATG already there.
South of that summit, a Sov probe was approaching from the east, threatening surviving PzGrn pltns and our stranded recovery maintainence personnel. In that south area -- back behind the PzGrn positions-- there were three PzV(Panters) recently repaired, and a le.mtr platoon.
My KG, arriving in the SW, was in two prongs--North and South. The north prong --PzIILuchs, PiWg, Pionier and ATR-- was set to link up with southern wing of Stab MG Kompanie. My southern prong --PzIV, one heavy recon vehicle, Pionier, Recc truppen and MG-- was to advance east to SE Woods --bringing ammo to PzGrn there-- then ultimately north for flanking run on summit, after linking up with PzV(Panthers) and le.mtrs.
But that Sov south probe was a full on Sov Inf btn advance supported by tanks!
I needed that SE area secured if I was to move on the summit before the Russian artillery got fully set there and started to decimate the area for kilometers...
[[[PLAY BY PLAY]]
SET UP
Stab MG Kompanie+PzSk positions tweeked. [Could have been better in retrospect: should have made the summit overlook the right flank of this ambush party.]
/ArmMaint[Pion] to foxholes and buildings. [Actually, 'Alee' of buildings, in woods --better for dismount.] /PzGrn1 and /MG tweeked in SE woods; /PzGrn2 to foxholes by Hillfarm. /PzV(Panthers), /le.mrt and s_222s back to SW woodline. [Could have brought le.mrts forward to woods there.]
n_PiWg[222] and n_Luchs closer to n_ATR and n_Pioniers for later mounting. {They linked up with StabMG-southwing.}
s_PzIV + s_MG(mounted) towards SE woods (for flanking run). s_RecTrp[PzGr] to SW woods as link up with /le.mrts, and s_222.
__________
Turn 1 set
Many Sov su76s on north road, many T-70s and Valentines too; and an ATG.
Sov T70 probe at SE.
Stab MG zug calls in Arti on assembled Valentines & T70s.
Stab MG southwing moving north to south side of summit WestPeak.
n_Luch withdraw to link up with moving n_Pioniers; n_ATR moves to n_PiWg[222] (they will go to summit WestPeak area, assist StabMG); n_Luchs + n_Pioniers will advance towards and occupy Hillfarm and relieve /PzGrn2 there.)
s_RcTrp[PzGrn] def-move to s_222 in SW woods. (Tight in SW woods there!)
/ArmdMaint[Pion] call in 81mrt smoke. (To cover cls assault /PzGrn2 there and cover both s_PzIV+s_MG run to SE woods and n_Luchs+n_Pioniers advance on Hillfarm.) {Cancel smoke after 1 turn!}
/MG rush to SE woodrise, assist /PzGrn1.
All else 'def hold'. (Especially those SW wood's /Panthers!)
===========
1 Play
North T70 advance, towards West. Sov Inf thrust in SE.
----------
Phase 1b set
Chose not to take a /Panther shot on su76 peaking over road...
/MG still rushing in SE woods.
...........
1b Play
North T70 advance, towards West. Major sov Inf thrust in SE.
MG-stab zug, spotting arti, draws fire.
n_250 draws fire from unseen. (It wasn't set to def hold: so far back I didn't think it necessary.)
n_PiWg[222]+n_ATR rushes to Peak's 'alee' (to assist Stab-Pzb there).
n_Pioniers didn't make it to n_Luchs; continue moving together. (damn)
s_PzIV+s_MG and s_shwRecc set to Rush to SE woods.
s_222+s_RcTrp[Pzgrn] withdraw (Rush next turn to SE woods. I want to absolutely crush all enemy in that SE area so I can focus on s_PzIV flanking of the SU76s and Valentines.)
/Panthers definitely def hold in SW woods.
=============
2 Play
Even more Inf south: second wave & on East Summit Road.
Enemy Air strike!!... n_PzII(Luchs) halved; n_pionier practically destroyed! (Assault on Hill Farm --which was to be northern spur of my counter to that Sov SE attack--in question now.)
[!!PzII Luchs don't carry troops in stock game! Ie the whole assembly area mounting procedure--which led to the loss there-- was a waste any way!]
StabMG spotting suppresed from SU76s.
My Arti arrives --no damage. My south east mrt smoke arrives.
----------
Phase 2b set
Anti air... All button up; Adjust into woods where possible.
/PzV opens up on SU 76 peaking over summit.
n_250 will pick up stabMG-southwing solo (to move to Hillfarm (in house) under smoke).
n_PiWg+n_ATR tweek to summit hill, concealed. (n_PiWg will then pick StabMG-southwing[reduced from airstrike] and deliver to Hill farm area under smoke.)
/PzV moves to get bead on South T-70. /le.mrt eng-move east.
/PzV (Panthers) Eng-Fire SU76 (still coming) _&_ a T70 south trying flanking run.
Rush s_222s+s_RcTrp[Pzgren] onto SE woodRise (ahead of s_PzIVs in there!). Advance s_PzIVs in SE woods into position....
4 Play
(Good turn!)
Sov SP and both south T70s destroyed by /PzV (T70 auto destroyed). SU dead-on targeting one /Panther though!....
Some south Sov Inf in SE wood edge now. Sov Inf occupying Hillfarm (ahead of my n_PzIILuchs, darnit).
Sov North advance was NOT preluded by barrage (even though StabMG-spotting was making big racket up there, drawing fire).
Consequently, my Stab-PzShrk(right on top of MG stab) is def-hold (invisible) un-pertubed as they wait for 'one shot, one
kill' times three tms.
------------
Phase 4b set
All StabMG firing on moutned INf of T-70; one Stab ATR Pzshrek opens up on lead (rest Pzsrk def-hold) --I hope to create
traffic jam.
One n_PIILuchs stops in tree line and covers for rest(shoots at rushing Sov Inf [MG since they're moving), as they rush
final leg into woods south of Hillfarm.
/PzV(Panthers) do some creative targeting (and withdrawing) since one has been targeted dead on.
/PzGrn1 opens up on South Sov Inf; s_222s+s_RecTrp[Pzgrn] contuinue buttoned rush to final leg onto woodrise, ahead of
advancing s_PzIVs. (I wonder what enemy is there, since some seeable Sov inf has already made it to wood edge...)
............
4b Play
SUPER turn! Five SU76s destroyed by /Panthers; Three Sov Inf squads.
One StabMG has 2 bags now.
[This has turned ito the "Prokhorovka of Panthers".]
In SE Woods, set detailed, more patient combat deployment ('advance' etc to tree lines).
n_PIILuchs fire on Hillfarm and south Inf wave; one advances north to Hillfarm through smoke.
/Armdmaint[pion] spots 81mrt on south Inf wave.
/PzV open up on Hillfarm Inf and SU's _Inf supprt_.
n_Pion --finally unsuppressed after airstrike decimation -- rushes to summit alee (by ATR there).
n_250 +StabMG solo Rushes to target Hillfarm's north flank.
=============
5 Play
Dead:
T-70 north by PzShrk.
Fair amount of Sov Inf all over.
------------
Phase 5 set
/PzV(Panther) lays smoke on Stab. All Stab open up.
............
5b Play
More Sov Inf dead.
Another T-70-North gone. Smoke in; but Stab is suppressed, some with 2bags.
___________
Turn 6 set
(Now that summit is denied enemy, I can maneuver with security. This allows me to move on his rear in prongs.)
/MG finally unsuppressed after airstirke.
SE wood deployment is set --and they come.
/le.mrt finally in range: Target, indirect, lead SouthEast Sov Inf.
Withdraw n_PzII Luchs to rd.
Move out /PzV to dirt rd; withdraw _PzIII (enemy barrage coming?).
............
6b Play
Sov South East Advance is _destroyed_ but for lrg pltn. (Then on to East Summit Rd (Hillfarm) for flanking of Sov North (some Su76s back there still!).)
_____________
Turn 7 set
/PzV (rushes) to West Woods (hope rushing wasn't mistake -- concerned about Sov Arti though.)
Stab calls in Smoke on location... (1 turn only!)
============
7 play
A n_ATR (German) dead! Sloppy moving.[grrr!]
SE thrust is surprisingly re-animate. [hmmm?]
SE woods & Field set to mop up; Hillfarm Inf surprisingly tenacious.
...............
8b Play
New T-70s (the poof breechers) now destroyed by Stab PzSk!
Two Stab PzShrk killed. ...Just as all that smoke came in. (I will get that surviving stab out of there! But they are in a depression which I can not cover from my /PzV positions, and have always been suppressed.)
________________
Turn 9 Set
s_PzIV advance on East summit rd and Hillfarm; s_222s withdraw to pick up s_RcTrp[Pzgren] (will deploy to East Summit rd, spotting for s_PzIVs.)
_PzIII torwards Hillfarm. (But Will double back to alee, facing west so as to have point plank flanks of next Sov breech, once Sov Hillfarm eyeballs are gone/confused.)
Stab unsurpressed! Coming out! Relieving Force (of n_ATR, reintroduced Stab MG and n_PiWg) tweeking deployment there.
Sov Inf North rush right on top of Stab PzSrK! Fortunately the Stab MG that covered full MG withdrawal suppressed them.
My PzIV advance to E Summit Rd continues.
------------
Phase 10b set
Mount n_ATR on n_PiWg(222).
Stab PzSrk surrounded; targeting Sov Inf. Stab MG-Far targets that Inf too.
...........
10b play
Final Stab PzSkr deceased. (Those appearing and healing Sov tanks have really taken toll! grrr)
!!! Entire Sov North armour changing plan: rushing/advancing on Hill Farm over summit. My 81mrt coming in next turn non-purposefully right on their path.
________________
Turn 10 set
Cancel close sheaf 81Mrt since SU76s won't be there now.
SE woods s_222s & s_RecTr tweeking deployment to deal with Sov Pltn flank attack.
s_PzIV stop and face Sov armor assault.
n_PzII Luchs rushing to cover; one towards Sov and summit alee.
Withdrawing /PzV(Panthers). Then advance to CenterWoods high spot and engage Sov armour flanks.
StabMG-Far shooting Sov Inf breecher. Hopefully will draw T-70 turret, so my n_ATR Inf and _PzIII can get bead on him.
Last of Sov Inf in HillFarm Woods destroyed by /PzGrn2 [Payback for earlier [pre game] decimation. ;-)]
Sov Inf rushes over summit and gets in on n_PzIILuchs 3.
StabMG-Far took more casualties. Can't get bead on T-70 from my n_ATR or advancing Command tank (_PzIII). All that smoke is turning into a nuisance --especially since the Stab PzShrk all died anyway.
--------
Phase 12b set
All available Inf targeting that Sov Inf rushing in on n_PzIILuchs3 (popped out of holes if necessary).
/Le.mrt no longer in danger: indirect on that rushing Inf ('leading'); indirect also on the SE woods 'commandos'.
s_PzIV targeting some Valentines [halt advance.]
RE: Spellir(German) vs Falco(Russian)
=================
Assessment of enemy tactics:
-Horrible use of artillery. (_None_ on un dug in standing positions 'defending'.)
-Armour thrusts on set positons should have come as _lines abrest_ not columns. (Technically according to real life doctrine, as wedges --"panzer kriel"--so as to force enemy gunners to have to constantly reset sites.)
-poor use of terrain. [Hill slopes and wood patches can cover flanks.]
:should have covered assault on my MG/PzSrk by using _north slope_ of summit: LOS above my MG company but flank-protected from my southguns by summit.
:Valentines should have been part of the abrest-attack on my Stab truppen (doctrine is heavier tanks breakthough Inf/strongpoints, lighter exploit); all armour should have stayed out of range of PzShrk until well softened by arti and HE/MG direct (from hill slope alee).
:should have moved behind SE woods with tanks, covering full occupation of Hillfarm and East rd summit --denying me easy flanking run on Sov North rear. [Inf advance across field on set MG positions = bad.] Arti to SE woods and smoke screen due west of woods (blocking LOS); then maybe take 250point! flag (in SE wods) with Inf (and tanks).
:should have used inf to look/spot over summit and get bead on everything; Not SU76s in column! (SU76s should move about in Sov rear to ward off our Stab-spotted arti; then finally deploy to south-facing line just north of entire crest length, waiting...)
Once my Pz positions are moving (Sov arti chaos and my redeployments) --exposing Pz flanks-- advance SU76s _abrest_ to overwatch on summit _and East Summit Rd/Hillfarm_.
At the same time, massed attack _prongs_ (syncronized) attack west out of SE woods and _south around summit's west end_ (over my dead MG company up there) (with more smoke covering vulnerabilities).
:coordinate attacks: maximize fire/chaos from different directions; wide line. Patience.
CONCLUSION:
Enemy apparently wanted to set SU76s first (frontally vulnerable though long range deadly), to cover his attack prongs, underestimating my set position sightings on that summit; didn't revaluate quick enough, once my effective positions and fire took toll. No arti even after I exposed myself.
