Blistering the Sun: AlliedPylut vs. JuanGomez

Post by AcePylut »

My first AAR, gonna be kinda dry though...

NO JUAN PLZ

Looking for a fun game from my esteemed oppt... one that doesn't game the system, trying to 'play it as a war', should be fun...

The HR's

ON: Real R&D
Allied DC
Off: Reliable Torps
No Withdrawals

And since we like a little randomness, reinforcements @ +-60

Surprise, but no historical, first turn, with following understanding...

Allies can only form TFs offmap or on the West Coast
Allies can not change orders or move any air units or TFs
Allies can however change orders for the two US CV groups and Force Z

Japanese will withdraw KB from Hawaii by Dec 9th at the lastest (ie 2 days of strikes)

No gaming the CBI theater for troops, gotta pay the pp

Strategy:

First month, I want to fight where I can, no sir robin for me... but I'm not going to be suicidal (too much). Going to try and pull off a covered retreat back to Singapore, and will obviously make my stand in Clark/Manila. Force Z is getting pulled back, CV's are getting outta dodge, I might bring them around to the DEI, might keep them in the Central Pac... not sure yet, gotta just react to where the KB isn't, at this stage.

Turn 1 went off pretty well, only lost 2 BB @ Pearl, Force Z got away.

12.8.41Today was a good day. December 8th saw the KB stick around PH, and I was able to put up every plane I had on CAP... they made a good accounting of themselves, to the tune of crippling the KB's Kate squadrons :)

Japs landed at Khota Bharu, no surprise... the PI invasion fleets are on their way.

Force Z is hidden and has added a number of ships, but the Singapore are is sub infested. Since Sing's LB's can't do much against naval, gonna put em on ASW and see if I can get a few hits. Gonna keep Force Z around to try and strike somewhere. My buffs caught a bunch of Bettys unescorted and shredded them.

Force X is forming up in the Bali region to act as a quick reaction force, then retire to OZ and see if I can't wreak havoc on the inevitable assault on PNG/Solomons.

My CV's have escaped. A sub of mine sighted the KB's replenishment fleet 120 miles east of Midway, and put a couple of torps into an oiler :)

Moving the AVG to Rangoon and China...

Post by AcePylut »

Here's the air losses... sorted by today... 37 Zero's, 37 Kates, 22 Betties. Wow. All I can think of is that I flew all my cap at 20k, and most of the strikes came in at 10-15k. But then, I did catch half of the Kates unescorted, and 10 of those 22 Betts were also unescorted.

I doubt the KB will stick around a third day. So far, lost 4 BB's sunk, Force Z is out of sight, and I've hurt the KB as bad as I think it can be hurt at this point. :)

Here's the air tallies...

RE: Blistering the Sun: AlliedPylut vs. JuanGomez

Post by AcePylut »

Well, let me discuss my initial “Jap Expansion” strategy.

I can sum it up in two words:  “Fighting Withdrawal”.  I don’t wanna do a Sir Robin, that’s lame to me.  My plan on this “fighting withdrawal” is not so much to inflict major casualties as much as it is to delay the expansion as much as possible – although inflicting casualties is a high priority too… it’s just that the Allies won’t really “win” any stand-up fights (Dec 8th air battles are an exception, imho).

I’ll identify theaters as “reactive” and “proactive”.  Reactive means, in a nutshell, “Respond to any Jap excursions based on the situation”.  Proactive means “Decide on where to defend before being attacked”

So I’ll go through the theaters with a brief overview.

North Pacific:  Re-active Theater.  Not going to expend a lot of effort trying to defend that which can’t be defended, at this point in time.  I’ll let them come to me, if they so choose.

Central Pacific:  Guam and Wake are obviously goners.  I would like to hold Midway, but know I can’t against a concerted effort.  I’ll defend here with what I can.  I hope they take Johnston Isle – could use a training base close to PH and far from their supply.  PH- fight to the death.

South Pacific:  Reactive for the most part, except I want to hold on to Suva if possible, and Canton also.  But again, can’t against a concerted effort.  They have invaded Tarawa, and my CV’s are two days steam.  I’m going to rush my CV’s to a striking range, and maybe I can catch a transport or two.

SouthWest:  I want to hold PM as long as possible, hopefully forever.  I have units moving into Rabaul to provide a small bee-sting for when they come.  Also have some SCTF’s lurking.

PI:  Fight Fight Fight.  I want to use all those airgroups and soldiers with withdrawal dates to fight fight fight.  I’d rather they all end up flaming hulks when their withdrawal date.  Going to make a stand in the Manila/Clark/Bataan triangle.  Moving as many supplies to bataan as can be held there.  I’m loading up all the PI ships with resources/oil – and if they get sunk, which a majority of them probably will, at least they’ll take down valuable resources with them, rather than let the Japs have them.

DEI:  Fight as much as possible.  Force Z and “Force X” are intact, unspotted, and ready to launch some quick “in and out” strikes against invasion forces.  I’m biding my time with them, for the right opportunities.

Malaya:  I’m leaving small forces along the axis of attack… going to make a stand at Singapore, the base just to the NE of it, and the clear hex base a couple hexes NW of it.  I know it’s clear terrain, but it’s close to Singapore’s airfield.  I plan on extracting a few select LCU’s for future revenge.  I’ll post a screenie later with plans.

China:  Hmmm, dunno.  Going to make a move on Ichang, consolidate all my spread out troops, recon any “big stacks”, and try to use my LCU numbers to “re-spread out” around these death stars.  This will force him to constantly protect the flanks and rear.  I want to move into cities that I know I can’t take in assaults, to deny him the supplies and industry.

Burma – Going to withdraw to Imphal… after defending Rangoon and Mandalay as much as long as possible.  Will use the same “consolidate but then spread out” strategy as China.

I haven’t decided on if I’m moving my US CV’s to the DEI region as another “quick in and out” strike force, or if they are going to lurk around the South/Central Pacific.  Wherever they are, I am most definitely going to avoid the KB, despite it’s depleted air groups (100 kates, 140 kates, what’s the difference against 3 CV’s.. ‘eh?).  I won’t be opposed to my CV’s engaging the Mini-KB, especially if my CV’s can form up with the Brits.

I received the turn last night, and will post the CR this evening.  In short, I had a PT squadron attack and destroy a Jap DD.  The Jap sub force just south of Singapore’s are deadly – got some ASW tf’s forming to get some hits.  Planes in Singapore, Palemburg, and Batavia are going on ASW duty.

RE: Blistering the Sun: AlliedPylut vs. JuanGomez

Post by AcePylut »

So the question is... where did the KB go?

Well it was a good thing I spotted the KB's replenishment fleet. Today, it had moved south and east (screenie to follow later today) of Midway a number of miles, and is "moving west" (for what that's worth). From this, assuming the fleet is following the KB, I deduce the KB is heading South - likely chasing after possibly US CV carriers, and if not, heading to Kwaj to support actions in the South Pacific.

Good thing my CV's are far away. Low on fuel, yes, but far away and they'll be topped off with fuel shortly.

Going to continue to try and play around with this aar format... was thinking of just doing theater summaries, with cr posts of the main battles with my comments.  No need to waste space talking about each AKl that gets sunk...

As I go along, I'll post more screenies

thoughts?

I totally agree. CRs tend to make me zone out. I like more to hear about plans and how they turn out. Looks like you're doing quite a number on his nells[:D]. Buffaloes seem to do a bit better in AE than in WitP. I just downloaded AE the other day, and ran the first turn as allies vs. the AI. My buffs shredded some betties but POW and Repulse went down anyway. Keep up the good work, I'll be reading[:)].
