I have CCV.

Is this worth the purchase? Is there really that much difference?

I purchased CC Modern Tactics. Didnt enjoy that so much. It was buggy and the pathfinding was god-aweful. Does TLD suffer from the same problems?

Do tanks make sound when they move? If not, why? After all these years you'd think they'd make THAT improvment. If you can hear a pistol or a sub machine gun fire, you sure can hear a tank engine.

I think the game is worth the money. It fixes many CC5 bugs and adds a number of new features to the game.

Path finding in TLD is better than CCMT due to AI tweaks and the smaller maps (some are bigger than CC5 but compared to CCMT most maps are small as WW2 weapons tend to have shorter ranges than modern weapons).

Atomic games supposedly had vehicle sounds during development/testing at one time but removed them as the non stop tank noise started to bug the players/testers....

So is it possible to mod engine sounds?

If they were annoying, why didnt the programmers just progam the engine to stop when the vehicle stopped.

No offence, but the company closed in Dec 2000 and none of the programmers of the time are around to answer.

And I think tank engine noises would ruin the game. The silence when there is no firing adds to the tension !

IF there are no programmers then how did they manage to edit the game and make changes?

How could you not want to hear tank engines? Its one of the only unrealistic aspects left of the CC series. It works great in other games...Combat Mission, Blitzkrieg.

The best way to do it is have 2 sounds per vehicle - an idle sound, and a moving sound. Works fine.

Vehicles should definitely have sounds. Every other RTS on the planet has them.

Because the sound would overwhelm the game! And we lose the tension !

And which direction do you feel the sounds would be coming from?

And its not an RTS game anyway!

How would the sound overwhelm the game? Its not like we have 30-tank battles. Most engagements have 2-4 tanks roaming around.

What tension are you talking about? I'd find alot more tension if I heard a panzer IVG approaching my lines than nothing. Havent you ever played Blitzkrieg or Combat Mission. I cant IMAGINE those games if they didnt have vehicle audio.

Why is this so hard to understand?

Its unrealistic and just WEIRD.

Sure vehicle sounds got it's pros and cons. Personally I would switch it off after a while as it will make it difficult to hear all the other sounds.

To answer your original question, yes it is worth buying the game. Game patched to fix CC5 bugs. Bigger strat map covering large area of DDay landings. Ongoing updates. And ability to play patched game online.

In RTS games you don't hear all the sounds playing at the same time, you would only hear a tank, for example, when you zoomed in closer to the tank. That would be a nice feature in CC games but the game engine is too old to support that method of doing sound for vehicles as far as I know. Hearing tanks all the time would be annoying though so it is better with no tank sounds than tank sounds incessantly.
