selecting effects for event triggers

Post by kenwolfe »

Hello. I am using the scenario editor in TOAW III release 3.2.29.27. I am trying to set up some events using the Event Editor and I have found that for some trigger types only certain effects from the list are available. All possible effects are available for the triggers:

1/2 uses chemical
1/2 uses nucleuar
event activated
event canceled
turn

However, only limited types of effects are available for the following trigger types:

1/2 attacks
1/2 occupies
1/2 winning
unit destroyed
variable

For these trigger types, only the effects marked below by 'x' are available:

Activate event
Air Shock 1/2
Air transport 1/2
Cancel event
Cease Fire x
Cool front x
Disband unit
Enable event
End normal x
End victory 1/2 x
Force 1/2 track
Formation orders
Guerrillas 1/2
News only x
Nuclear attack
Nuclear OK 1/2
Open Fire x
Pestilence 1/2
PO 1/2 Activate
Rail Damage 1/2
Rail Repair 1/2
Rail Transport 1/2
Refugees 1/2
Remove zone 1/2 x
Replacements 1/2
Sea Transport 1/2
Set ownership 1/2
Shock 1/2
Storms x
Strategic bias 1/2
Supply 1/2 +
Supply 1/2 -
Supply Point 1/2
Supply radius 1/2
Theater Option 1/2
Theater recon 1/2
Use chemicals 1/2 x
Variable +/-
Victory 1/2 +
Warm front x
Withdraw army
Withdraw unit

The others cannot be selected as possible effects for those event types. Is this a limitation of the design of the event engine, or is it a known problem or am I doing something wrong? Thanks.

You have to do something I think if you select "no trigger" (or is it no event) it should reset everything.

I have run into this before it is not a limitation or anything you just have to clear the event.

I tried that, both by selecting No Trigger and by cycling through all the possible triggers, I got the same result. I even tried setting the effect first, it let me do that but did not actually display the event (it still showed "no trigger" and "no event") When I went to select a trigger, the only ones available were:

1/2 uses chemical
1/2 uses nucleuar
event activated
event canceled
turn

All the others were grayed out and could not be selected. It really does look like there are limitations on what trigger and effect types can go together in the same event. Can anyone confirm whether this is true or if there is something else I need to do? Thanks.

I don't have the game loaded on this PC so hopefully someone who can duplicate will let you know how to get the options back.

It has happened to me before so I know what you are talking about but I was able to get the options to reset so it can be done. I think you have to reset Turn and then No Trigger and it will reset....try that.

If no one comes along to help I will not be home for a few hours when I get home I will be able to go into events and figure it out. I know you have to set one thing and then another and then they all come back...sorry I could not be more of a help.

I found the following in The Operational Art of War Scenario Design Guide by Todd Klemme which suggests this is actually a design limitation of the event engine:

"Some Event triggers require the use of two Events instead of one. If you set an
Event trigger and the Event effect you want is not available, then the effect
requires two separate Events. “Force 1 occupies” is a good example. To do this
type of Event, set the first trigger (for example, Event number 12) to “Force 1
occupies” and leave it as a news only Event. Then set the second Event’s trigger
( Event number 13 in this example) to “Event activated”, set the effect to whatever
effect you want, and the turn activated (the third button on the first line) to, in
our example, Event number 12. This tells Event 13 to put into action the effect you
want only after Event 12 is activated. Yes, this is 1 more Event than it seems it
should take. I don’t know why some Events are programmed this way but they
are."

This does suggest that if I want a "Force 1 occupies" to trigger one of the effect types not available for that trigger type, I need to make it a News Only event and have a second event triggered on that one. I guess that would work, but I'm wondering if that's still the way it needs to be done in the latest TOAW III release.

Yes, not all effects are available for all triggers. Like you say, you must use a news event first.

Also of interest, the 'Activate Event' and 'Enable Event' have different uses, and don't work for all purposes. I found it best to make a small test scenario so that events could be quickly run and checked for accuracy.

Thanks for the tip. I'll proceed on that basis.
