Is there anything on the base screen that shows if they're there or not?

I also want to expedite production of barrage balloons! Something to keep those 4E's above 6,000 ft at last.

To think that we've turned to a mid 19th century weapon to succour our depression over the nearly invulnerable B-17.
I've also poured resources into propaganda to shorten the length of runways, provide free liquor for B-17 air mechanics and offers of free geisha girls if the pilots would only land at my airfields rather than bomb them.

Is there any information on what causes the barrage balloons to appear? I did a search of the manual for the word "balloon" and the forum, and only see this old thread.

My PBEM opponent has encountered these over in raids over Darwin and Perth and has been inquiring about what I'm doing to cause them. While I'd like to say the balloons are proper divine punishment for bombing helpless Aussie women and children, logically there are game mechanics causing them to appear.

Are the balloons triggered by being at specific bases, specific units, specific devices (types of AA?), lower altitudes of bombers or what? Thanks to anyone who knows.

I've been encountering these for a long time. They'll damage a few planes and on occasion destroy one. Hasn't stopped me from flying low level bombing runs. A real nuisance for sure, but not a war winner or something that should scare you away from dropping down to low level if the target warrants it.

Just out of curiosity, Alex, do you have those balloons over Sydney? I ask for no particular reason, mind you, just idle curiosity...[:'(]

One of my very early addition to counter low level attacks.

The Balloon effect is determined by maximum value of (a) plus (b) below. The overall maximum of the sum is 9.
(a) Balloons are present in a base if the AF + port > 6. The value is the fort level of the hex.
(b) Balloons can be added to a base/LCU by creating a device of type BALLOON. The value is the number of devices. [not currently in use]

They affect aircraft flying below 6000'.

Twin-engine or higher planes increase the number of balloons by 4.

Balloon level is not reported but is usually the fort level if the combined value of the base is >6.
Pilot experience should help to avoid balloons (except for the bug I just found which is not always using the right pilot!!!)

Thanks, Michael.

Andre, you're welcome to try Sydney. Although your raids are like watching the end of Australia without having Nicole Kidman around as eye candy.

Not sure how to take that comment:

1. Boring and banal drivel
2. Completely ineffective entertainment
3. Lots of burning ships and the like with no effective defense offered

I guess I'll assume you meant #3. [:'(]
