Should weather be Harsher?

Post by Fintilgin »

Does anyone else feel weather should be a bit harsher? It seems too easy right now to smash the low countries and France in the snow and mud, and as the Germans I didn't notice any serious effect from the Russian winter except my units were a bit slower.

I'd suggest more mud everywhere, during mud season. Right now it seems really spotty and patchy. Armored and motor units should also perhaps suffer a combat penalty when sitting on muddy hexes?

As for winter, maybe there should be a 'Winter Fighting' stat, a bit like doctrine. Any unit on a snow hex suffers a large hit to strength/effectivness. This is countered by your nations having levels in 'Winter Fighting', which runs from, say, 1-5 and at level 5 you suffer no penalty. You can't 'buy' it, it increases by events and over time.

So, for example, the Allies and Germany start at level 0. Russia starts at level 3. Finland starts at level 5.

Fighting the war with Finland (by event) gives Russia 2 more levels (win or lose). So in the winter of 1941 the Russians will be very tough.

German 'Winter Fighting' increases by 1.5 (round down) every March 1st that they have been at war with Russia at least six months (survived the winter). It's 0 in 1941, so Germany is at a big disadvantage . Winter 1942 it is 1.5, effectively 1. Winter 1943 it's 3. Winter 1944 it's effectively 4, after that they're even.

Western Allies start at zero in 1939 and go up 1 every two years. Jan 1st, 1941 Allies are at 1. Jan 1st, 1943 Allies are at 2. This means that come the winter of 1944, the German will have a 'Winter Fighting' advantage, which will help them maybe pull off a 'Battle of the Buldge' type scenario.

Just some thoughts, because right now weather doesn't have enough 'punch' in my eyes. I shouldn't even want to try to attack the West until spring because my units will be screwed over by the weather, and similarly, as the Germans, I should dread the Russian winter as more that just a period when my units move slowly.

I think the weather itself is fine. As for the Russian Winter effect, this was most felt by the Germans during the first winter, so constant effects might not be the way to go in this regards. I would rather have a winter Event, where all German units in Russia suffer a huge efficiency hit in Dec, Jan, Feb of 41/42.

A 'bit' slower. I think my germans forgot their snowshoes because my foot soldiers can only move one hex and my motorized aren't too much better. I think weather is fine.

Weather is pretty easy to be modded.
You can change the generic impact of the weather, or you can change it country specific.
