Still a Buy?
I kknow that this is an older title. It still looks like some are still playing it. Is this still a viable game to purchase even with the age of it?

RE: Still a Buy?
Even though I enjoy playing WiTP, I always keep a game of UV going simultaneously. It has most of the same basic elements as WiTP, but the flow of the game is much faster and at times I find that aspect very satisfying. Yes, it shows its age a bit, especially now that AE is out.

RE: Still a Buy?
I play against the AI and some of Grigsby's stuff is pretty daunting. I thought that this might be a "Light" game compared to his other offerings??

RE: Still a Buy?
Well, I can say it is a "light" version of WiTP. The scale of the map is much smaller and there are far less keystrokes to go through per turn. It is, however, a strategy game that places the emphasis on logistics. Supplying bases, building them up, and moving troops and equipment is very important to the ultimate outcome of a campaign.
If you like having that kind of detail mixed into a game about the war in the SW Pacific, you may find it very appealing, as I have. Start out with the AI set to "Historical" until you get the hang of things, then eventually go to the "Hard" setting for a bigger challenge.

I bought this too as a training vehicle to play AE later. I am still learning the rules, but I like it quite a lot. I am glad I started with something "simplier" to get the game play mechanics down, rather jumping directly into AE, too steep a gradient for me anyway!
RE: Still a Buy?
for $20, it is a great deal. I have several games going now. you can do a good, detailed turn in about 15 minutes. depending on the opponent, you can get several turns in a day on a game.

Yes it is still a viable purchase. For $20 dollars it is very good buy.
If it is ¨light¨ or not depends. To go through the entire campaign is a year long commitment. This to me is ¨heavy¨ but the turn are fast.
Maximum time 10 minutes for me and I run everything. Most are 5 minutes or less.
It does have some issues but for $20, if you have any interest in naval battles or the Pacific theatre you will be happy.

RE: Still a Buy?
Hi everyone.
Just stopping by to say I've just ordered UV off e-bay for very few dollars - Woo Hoo!!!
I've played WitP in the past and am hoping the smaller scale of UV will make it a bit easier to manage (and with quicker turns). AE seems REALLY daunting!
Quick question about UV - can it be played in windowed mode or do you have to play in fullscreen all the time? (As tends to be the case with older games).
Cheers!

Heck yeah, most definately still a buy.

RE: Still a Buy?
more players = more possible opponents! WELCOME!!!!!!!!!!
RE: Still a Buy?
For $20.00 it is a great buy. The systems requirements are so modest, I was able to load it on my computer at work and it runs great there. Makes the more boring days at the office go by fast! [:)]
RE: Still a Buy?
Yes.
I've bought this game 3 times, twice in retail and then once online. Don't ask, lets just say alot of moving and poor packing. After all these years this is one of a few games that stays readily available on my HDD.

I'm essentially graphically and history oriented, unfortunately to connect the two I have to do maths. I hate maths.

RE: Still a Buy?
I have AE. But I want a lot of small scenarios that AE doesn't have.
It only has one Guadalcanal variant, a coral sea scenario, and an Aleutean scenario. All other scenarios are variants of the grand campaign.
Is this game worth picking up for some "mini"-WitP action?

It depends. After playing WitP-AE, I cannot any more really enjoy this game. It has too many issues, and some nasty bugs. I have one PBEM-game going, but I'm not really into it any more. This is just my opinion, but UV doesn't feel the same after playing AE.
I wish they make something like UV with all those good AE-stuff...
RE: Still a Buy?
Ok. I like the WitP AE engine. Problem is that almost all campaigns are Grand in scope.
I wish they (or modders) port all campaigns from UV and the original WitP and bring it over to AE.

I'm still playng this one more than almost anything else. - WitP can just feel too big, UV fits the bill nicely.

RE: Still a Buy?
I've owned this game since it first came out, but never played it much. I'm itching for some WWII Pacific action again.
I'm tempted by WITP/AE, but only for small-map, limited-duration scenarios. Sadly, in that game community, there seems to be little interest in scenarios. So, back to UV.
Can anybody please concisely summarize where UV falls short
In other words, what are UV's remaining worst shortcomings? Bugs?
To what extent can one mod around the shortcomings/bugs? And/or use house rules?
Does this game still have plenty of life in it?
If it matters, I'm more interested in realism and plausibility, not so much in game balance or winning/losing in the game play sense. I'm also strictly a solitaire player. (I have my reasons!) If the AI is bad enough, I will hot-seat solitaire the game-as-simulation, play pretend FOW, etc., if need be.

RE: Still a Buy?
I have not bought UV.
AI of UV is foolish than AE?
Is play against AI exciting?
