AE Misc. questions

Here we go:
1. Some Eng units are labeled CPNAB-what does that stand for?
2. Japanese SS- How many hits does it take to sink one? I've had 9 hits 0n I-9 and 11 hits on I-11, no joy. Same question for RO boats.
3. How do you set oilfields, factories, etc. for destruction? I'm thinking of the DEI. Does setting a facitity for "no repair" do it, our is there something I can set Eng units to, to accomplish this?
4. Do Allied Eng units automatically repair base and port damage? I have bad damage at Wake for 4 turns, but the Eng unit doesn't repair. Of course, the last 2 turns there was little to no supply.
5. Pilot training- is there some AAR that gives a lot of info on this? Or something else thats been posted?

1.  I don't know.
 
2.  Many of the hits listed in the combat report are near misses that really don't do anything other than maybe a point or two of Sys or Flot.  When you watch the combat replay, a true hit will say Hit, followed by "Penetration" or something similiar.  It doesn't take many of those.
 
3.  You don't.  ENG at the base when it is taken by the enemy will destroy a random number of the facilities.  I've seen none, and I've seen nearly all the oil production at Palembang go poof. 
 
4.  Yes, and they need supply.
 
5.  Don't know.

1. Some Eng units are labeled CPNAB-what does that stand for?

They are civilian United States Navy units -- "Contractors, Pacific Naval Air Bases."

Before the Seabees were created, before the war began for the USA, in the Summer of 1941 the Navy awarded a contract to a consortium of the three largest construction firms in the United States, to build airfields to accomodate B-17s transiting from the US to Australia and the Philippines. The work was well underway when war broke out. Most of the runways under construction in the South Pacific were scheduled to be completed by January.

The largest contingent of contractors (over 1,000 men) was on Wake Island. Four hundred of the contractors helped the Marines defend the atoll. Some manned weapons, but most took over logistic and administrative duties, to free up the garrison to fight. Since it was against the articles of war for civilians to fight as soldiers, the Navy quickly decided to form uniformed construction battalions (c.b.-s or "Seabees")

But until the Seabees started to arrive in the Spring of 1942, the CPNABs served as the US Navy's main engineering resource in the Pacific. The CPNAB contracts were closed out in July, 1942.

As a house rule, CPNAB units should never be sent to a base which contains Japanese forces.

and all the CPNAB units withdraw in July 42, so you need to plan on getting replacement BFs sent out, or the bases (Palmyra, Johnson, Pago etc) will have problems.

Are there PP penalties to not withdrawing air and land units by their scheduled withdrawal date?  I've got one ship that's not been withdrawn yet and my PP supply is bleeding down a lot faster than I figured one late ship would cause, then I noticed I had a ton of LBA squadrons that needed to be withdrawn too.

There are a lot of units on the Allied side that have withdrawal dates. I think a lot of it is designed to prevent "Sir Robin" defenses from giving the Allies a huge number of LBA units. Also, most of the LBA on the West Coast has withdrawal dates.

You dont have a choice on land units. They go poof whereever they are on their date. As for air, yes. You will pay for it.

I think this is the first 40 minutes of John Wayne in "The Fighting Seabees." Was it "Island X"? And Fred Mertz along to boss the dozer drivers?

I found that out the hard way; the first ship needing to be withdrawn was 2 weeks away from a port I could withdraw it from, and I went from 1100 PP's to about 250 before I got that ship (plus the Dickman) withdrawn.

When I checked my air squadrons for withdrawal, many of them didn't give me the option and I had to disband them instead. Why couldn't I withdraw them (the button was greyed out)? They were still at their mainland US bases for the most part.

Hi-Some more ?s.

1. Enemy troop strength on island. Is AE the same as WITP in that when you place your cursor over an enemy bases's troop icon and it shows 1300 troops at base there is really about 3 times that many?

2. Convoy escort/protection. I had one post asking how many escorts there should be for a AK-AP TF. Answer was no more that 5, with a comment "escorts are to keep subs down, killing is done by my ASW TFs."
Fine, but does that mean I should have an ASW TF follow the transport TF ?

I don't normally have ASW follow a TF. I use ASW from bases to jump on spotted subs. Might change that slightly with the new patrol feature but have to see how that works.

As this is a thread about questions I'll add a few of my own.

1. On plane groups is there some way to merge detachments together. I pulled all operational planes out of one base and left the others being repaired and then as they become useable I pull them out this results in several detachments of the base squardon being formed. How do I merege them? Disband the detachments?

2. How do you use the various small craft and float plane tenders? How does a float plane tender work in game terms? What is the best use for AGs?

3. Any tips on mine warefare?

4. Due to their low morale will chinese units be good for offensive operations? They do have high assault values in some cases.

Float plane tenders are essentially mobile Aviation Support units for floatplanes. Useful when you have, say, some PBY's operating out of a small base without having to send av support ground units that you might need for a big front line airfield somewhere else.

Here are my initial group of questions. I'm waiting for the printed manual to come in the mail, as an old guy like me can't read 332 pages of PDF.

1. India detachments - do I need to keep all those little detachments spread across India to keep down partisans or something like that, or can I send them all to Chittagoing? Admittedly they start our 10/10 ratings on experience and morale, so may not be much use anyway, but I don't want to move them and then have India erupt in revolt.

2. Combat v. Strategic Move, Transport v. Amphib - Do LCU's get smaller when they switch from Combat to Strategic Move? Otherwise why ever do this? This new wrinkle of Transport TF's v. Amphib TF's is throwing me off as I try to load units on Turn 1. Also, when you unload an LCU in Strategic Move mode, does it automatically switch to Combat, or do I need to do that?

3. AK's and LCU's - I read various threads on whether AK's can load LCU's or not. What is the definitive answer?

1. Most of the little detachments have withdrawal dates, so don't get too attached. Also, Karachi (definitely) has a garrison requirement; not sure how many others. I pulled the Australian start unit out of Karachi and then had to move something else in to avoid stuff getting blown up.

2. This is most useful in India and West Coast for moving units around over land. MUCH FASTER than marching! Also, if you are going to a port with sufficient capacity for unloading, Transport/Strategic Move loads and unloads much faster than Amphib/Combat. Be careful; the Amerian APs are too big for some of the places you need troops early on, so you need to have them in Amphibious mode. Also, Amphib mode loads supplies along with the troops; transport does not (or I read that it is not supposed to).

3. My experience is that the answer is "it depends". LCUs now have both troop and cargo transport requirements, so AKs are very important for hauling the cargo portion of the requirements. Some AKs also have small troop capacity (I know Japanese can convert some of their AKs to this), and some armored units have no troop requirements (i.e. no infantry squad 'devices'=no troop requirements); in both cases, this lets you load LCUs onto AKs in their entirity.

Sort of. LCUs in Strategic /Transport mode are loaded "most efficiently." LCUs in Combat/Amphibious mode are "combat loaded" -- most important stuff on top, sacrificing about 20% in capacity.

If the port/dock is big enough, LCUs in Transport TFs will unload much faster then if they were in combat/amphibious mode.

same city in india (all big and same in the afganistan-tibet border) have a garrison value, so you must keep at least that number in Assalt Value here to prevent partisan (there are same other bases that must be garrisoned in the map for the allied side: go tho the base list screen, there is a switch that show garrison value)
Also, when you unload an LCU in Strategic Move mode, does it automatically switch to Combat, or do I need to do that?
you need do that. remember also that in strategic mode enginers don' t work and the LCU suffer a lot from combat/air strike.

AK can load LCU both in amphibious and in transport mode but with a penality (six time the normal space if i remember well) for the human components

Hi-New questions.

1. When you hover your cursor over an enemy TF and it reads:
Enemy TF
Clear sky
Ships sighted-1
Moving SE
E
What does the "E" signify? An escort TF, perhaps with damaged ships?


2. Is AE the same as WITP in that when you place your cursor over an enemy troop icon and it reads, say, 1300 troops, there are really about 3 times that # at the base?
