Japanese forces still on the offensive, sweeping into Malaya, Philippines, Burma, and the South Pacific.

Pearl Harbor was bombed twice by the Japanese, as was Midway as the Kido Butai exited the battlefield. Midway just reopened for air operations last week. Force Z was heavily damaged near Singapore in the opening round, and the BB Prince of Wales was lost as she attempted to withdraw to India for repair.

CVs Enterprise and Lexington were sent to Wake to attempt to head off the expected Japanese invasion fleet, but the sudden diversion of the Kido Butai towards Wake forced a hasty withdrawal with little damage done to the invading forces. Wake fell one day later.

I'm going to have to have a word with BuOrd! Damned torpedoes never explode!

In late December, US/AUS forces began Operation Forger, the militarization of several bases in the South Pacific, including Noumea, Tulagi, Port Moresby, and Guadalcanal.

Unfortunately, the Japanese got there first, landing troops in Tulagi 3 weeks before our units were to ship out. In response, the Tulagi Surface Group (note how I can name my TFs, very cool) was dispatched to the area to halt or disrupt the landing. They succeeded in sinking 21 ships at Tulagi at the Battle of Savo Island, the first major engagement of the conflict.

Additional Notes:

1) Japs have taken Canton Island, which plays havoc with my supply routes to AUS. They also have some small SAGs that seem to run around in my supply routes as well. Very disconcerting!

2) I have seaplane evac'ed most of Rabaul's garrison to Port Moresby, along with the militia groups at and around Lae. No sense wasting good Aussies!

3) Surface Battles are WAY more bloody now, my PT boats have been playing havoc around the PI.

4) Subs are much more aggressive and the AI is not shy about putting them around PH or the West Coast. Go unescorted at your own risk!

Thanks! I use Photoshop CS2 to make animated GIFs of the photos. Takes up less room. My text is kinda hidden though, will adjust next update.

PS: There are tons of tutorials for making slideshows through Photoshop CS2 on YouTube. Easy after you do it once!

Jan-Mar 1942

Major Points of Interest:
  • Fall of Singapore: Jan 21, 1942
  • Fall of Manila: Feb 12, 1942
  • Fall of Java: March 1942

***Official Intelligence Brief: April1, 1942***

Japanese forces have attempted to divide the Pacific between AUS and the US in order to strangle the SouthPac lifeline. The US counter-attack at Canton Island (and subsequent militarization/garrisoning) have blunted the Japanese spearhead. The IJN/IJA have now turned their attention to two major operations, both of which will be detailed here.

Op1: Port Moresby
IJ has attempted to land forces by amphibious means and by traversing the Kokoda Trail. The Amphibious attempts have been turned away by Allied SAGs and with the arrival of the 16th AUS Brigade at Port Moresby, the overland attacks have been ineffectual.
Also, the arrival of several P-40E squadrons and support staff have eliminated the air threat from Rabaul (unless they decide to escort their raids).

Op2: Noumea/Koumac
Over the past month the IJN/IJA has decided to try and put an end to the massive buildup of forces at Noumea, landing over 15,000 men and supplies at Koumac. Fortunately, the CA Houston SAG was able to break up the landings, inflicting devastating casualties to the enemy. Here is a synopsis of the losses to date in the Koumac operation:

20-40 IJ Transports sunk
90%/10,000 casualties at a minimum
2-5 warships, including 2 CAs confirmed.

Koumac is safely in the hands of 2 AUS Brigades as of this writing.

Conclusion: IJ offensive has been blunted in two major theaters with the victoriwes at Koumac, Canton Island, and Port Moresby. IJN forces seem focused on DEI at present, so heavier forces (including the appearance of CAGs and BB-led SAGs is expected within the next 2 months.

Player's Notes:
  • AI contiues to surprise with wild operations that panic me every other turn. The Koumac invasion forced the transfer of 3 AUS brigades out of AUS at heavy PP cost.
  • The KB is presently beating the every living crap out of Ceyon, disabling at serious British Naval threat. One UK CVL has been sunk and two BBs put into indefinite drydock and the attacks continue.
  • There are 15,000 troops at Buna. This massing of forces has led me to place heavy forces at Port Moresby. However, if IJ keeps sending them over piecemeal, they'll never have a chance. They try a coordinated Amphib and land strike which was turned back at Milne Bay. Interesting.
  • The final piece to the invasion puzzle, CVs Saratoga and Lexington are heading to Noumea to support the impending invasion of Tulagi.....

Chapter 3: Apr-July 1942

Image

***INTEL REPORT***
August 1, 1942

South and SW Pacific

IJN and IJA forces began an intensive campaign in April to reduce the air and land garrison at Port Moresby in advance of a planned invasion. They nearly succeeded. Over 200 aircraft, mainly P-40s and P-39s, were shipped down to stem the tide and arrived just in time to watch the squadrons in place drop to roughly 15% efficacy. Bolstered, these new squadrons rotated in and halted the advance. Several probes have been turned back at PM, and it appears that everything is in hand for th time being.

Battle of Brisbane and Invasion of Lunga

Halsey was tasked with covering the invasion of Lunga by the 8th Marine and 182nd Infantry Regiments. However, the IJN picked these exact dates (Early May) to begin hammering the Brisbane coast of AUS, apparently attempting to destroy the massive amounts of shipping in port (this was a successful tactic earlier this year against Ceylon). Halsey, seeing the land battle was in hand, pursued the IJN CVs down the coast, finally cathcing them near Brisbane. You can see the results above.

IJN Losses:
CV Junyo
CV Shokaku
CV Zuikaku
CVL Shoho
CVL Zuiho

US/AUS Losses:
CA Canberra
CA Australia

Major Defeat at Milne Bay

Operation Landfill, the invasion of Milne Bay by the 17th and 18th AUS Brigades was a catastrophe. Intel only indicated 8,000 troops at Milne Bay, so we were shocked when we discvered three IJA regiments with supporting forces in attendance. Both AUS Brigades were gutted with heavy losses. Tey are likely out for the remainder of this year. Furthermore, we took heavy losses in in the Amphib TF due to roving IJN BBs.

Overall Picture of SouthPac:

Image

Central Pacific

The situation in CentPac has gone much more poorly than SouthPac. The IJN made a spoiling attack towards Midway that drew out the only two CVs not refitting at Pearl (CV Wasp, CVE Long Island). Considering the opposition was 2 CVs, we felt the odds were equal considering the squadrons arrayed at Midway. But, alas, it was a trap. We were flanked from the north by 3 more IJN CVL and CVEs. We managed to damage two, but the Wasp and a BB were lost. A poor trade, but we could not ignore an attack on Midway.

IJN Losses:
None

US Losses:
CV Wasp
BB Oklahoma

Defeat at Baker Island

The IJN also threw back our small scle invasion of Baker Island. Again, Aerial Intel reported far fewer men on Baker Island than we encountered upon landing. The 21st Infantry Regiment was gutted with heavy losses. Additional forces are being prepared for another attempt with far superior numbers in men and material.

OVERALL ASSESSMENT AND PLANS

After the major defeats at Milne Bay and Baker Island, All landing operations have been suspended until further notice. Tactics must be reviewed and a new course of action taken to ensure our forces are able to gain territory with fewer casualties.

Our naval and air forces are entering an attrition phase of combat with the IJN. Over the next 3-4 months we will conduct combat patrols with CV TFs in CentPac and SouthPac to reduce the Japanese naval and air presence in these regions. When we have seriously reduced the number of BBs and CVs the IJN can field in these theaters, offensive landing operations will resume.
