Sub refueling bug (NOT "out of fuel")

Post by Kull »

Originally I had assumed that submarines could not refuel at sea, because the "Replenish TF at Sea" button is always greyed out for Submarine TFs. However, refueling at sea is possible if the submarine has a rendezvous with a Surface TF and the Waypoint or Patrol refuel option for that hex is set to allow some level of refueling (Minimal, Tactical, or Full).

As you can see in this screenshot, the sub is now completely refueled:

However, if you try the same tactic with a submarine TF that has zero fuel:

......the submarine will NOT refuel!! I'll spare you ten or so additional screen shots, but the fact is that a submarine with zero fuel will not refuel from anything, no matter what you do to the Patrol settings, Waypoint settings, Destination hex, or type of TF sent out to perform the refuel mission.

In fact, additional tests prove that you can refuel a Submarine from ANY kind of surface Task Force, so long as there is some fuel left in the tanks and the Waypoint or Patrol refuel options are set to allow some level of refueling (Minimal, Tactical, or Full). So the fact that refueling at sea does not work when a submarine is at Zero Fuel, would certainly appear to be a bug - it simply makes no sense.

Well, since the intent was not to let subs refuel at sea, the waypoint refuel seems to be a bug. No refuel from zero is just a bug in a bug.

I'll take a look.

That is funny. The bug has a bug which - in effect - is a fix for the original bug. [:D][:D][:D]

FWIW, if two Sub Patrol TFs meet up in the same hex with the Patrol Zone settings at some level of Refuel, they won't exchange fuel. (I tried this with one Sub TF at @14000 and the other at @2000, and there was no change in relative fuel levels.) So the "Patrol Zone Refueling Bug" only applies to the refueling of subs from surface TFs.

If you have a save that shows the issue, please post it. I will block the refueling of subs at sea via waypoint refuel option.

Probably just semantics, but this also occurs during the Patrol refuel option. Here's the save (from the Aleutians scenario) in which I-175 and the AS are set to meet just east of Attu. Play the turn through and you'll see the refueling occur.

.....the submarine will NOT refuel
I believe you. I was able to refuel some subs at sea and now I know why I couldnt get the empty subs to stay in one place. We were playing 2 day turns and I was trying to coordinate refueling task forces.

And if you leave the subs in a port, in order to wait for the patch to come out that fixes this problem, the computer will send out the sub again. From now on I will ask my Japanese foe to leave auto subs in the off position.

Also..... sometimes sub TFs show up in the ops report as 'out of fuel', but when I hunt through the all TFs screen to eventually find the TF in question, it is a sub, fully fueled, on patrol. WHY??

i'll see what i can do. Sadly (or stupidly!) i usually use just one save location, and keep on saving each turn. But i can check if it is still saying out of fuel on the current turn - i stopped checking the 'TF out of fuel' reports a few turns ago. At work right now, so best i dont load AE and start checking ops reports just at the moment! I'll try to remember this evening.

I listed a couple of requests in another thread ('Patch Requests') re. the ops report. Any idea if those things are included in the next patch? or maybe patch 2? I doubt i'm the first person to ask for the changes, but ive been spending more time actually playing the game, so ive not read through all the threads. Sorry if i'm duplicating work for you!

Use an option for autosave each turn. I use "-wd", which is windowed mode, daily save. A directory appears in the save folder, Autosave I believe, with a save for every turn.
