Difficulty Level POLL (CoG:EE)

Post by Marshal Villars »

Just curious who in this Crown of Glory Forum is a War in the Pacific Player. Anyone?

Also, please take the time to answer the following questions:

QUESTION 1
Please rate yourself for realism preference on a scale of 1 to 10 where:
1=I like games which are played for their great gaming value. Games with simple rules which have stood the test of time, like checkers and chess, interest me.
10=I like games with lots of rules and incredible variation. I am the kind of player who likes 300 pages of rules and even more appendixes and can spend hundreds of hours playing a game and enjoy spending many evenings a week planning every last move in the private bunker I have had built with a situation room.

QUESTION 2
Please indicate the following on a 1 to 10 scale:
1=I think that CoG:EE is by far and away too complex now and I can't believe I bought a game with more than 5 pages of rules! I thought this would make a great gift for my 4 year old daughter, but I see I was wrong!
3=Please tone the game down a bit, things are a bit over complicated.
5=I think that CoG:EE is at exactly the perfect level of detail/complexity now.
7=I would like to see more attention paid to several aspects of the CoG:EE game, including perhaps combat, naval warfare, supply, diplomacy and nation building. I wouldn't mind the fact that I would need to spend the time learning another 50 pages of rules to do this.
10=I think that CoG:EE is a great game now, but should have some attention paid to detail to turn it into a War in the Pacific--the ULTIMATE Napoleonic SIMULATOR!

QUESTION 3
Please indicate your interest in realism and research represented in a game on a 1 to 10 scale:
1=I want red and blue forces, and want to resolve the battle with one die roll.
5=I think that the people who have done CoG:EE have done the perfect amount of research and have delivered enough flavor to bring the period to life. More would have been a waste of time.
10=I love detail. Lots of detail. I know the kind of engine oil used on the Battleship Yamato and want to make sure I can track and verify production and logistics for every drop of it throughout the pacific with the click of 25 buttons (in sequence). If the Yamato ran on 5W30 I do not want it moving a single hex without knowing it's got 5W30 in it.

Thanks for your time!

Me? I have never played WITP, used to play Squad Leader, Flat Top, Third Reich, World in Flames, and Victory Games' Vietnam and had about 150 games at the height of my collecting mania.
Answers to questions:
1. I would rate myself a 7 in terms of complexity/time preference now, but was probably an 8 a long time ago. I don't want to spend more than 3 evenings a week gaming.
2. I would rate myself a 7 and would like to see more attention paid to several facets of the game.
3. I would rate myself a 7 here as well.

I like WITP AE so far.

I don't have a command center or anything, but I do enjoy a game complicated enough that I can daydream a few moves ahead while I am stuck in traffic. COG: EE Accomplishes this, WITP AE has a substantially higher learning curve. Have not decided if it is too complicated yet as I am only learning the rules. Received the physical game about a week ago and am reading the rulebook in the bathroom.

I guess I would call myself an 8 or 9 on the first question, and a 7-8 in the second. The third question you didn't flesh out very much. Probably 7 or 8. Sometimes too much detail can get in the way of a playable game. Not enough though and it starts to feel lacking.

I'm an old WiTP player; have not yet bought my AE copy, though I definitely WILL before Oct. Will post back in here later with more details [;)]
