Favourite Arty?

Post by fontenoy »

Okay troops,
Yet another entry in the interminable "Favourite"category.
What is your favourite Artillery, and why?

Myself I would have to say the "Wurfrahmen".Theres just something about 32cm flame rockets making barbecue out of entire Russian armoured columns that is so satisfying:D

Of course,I may have issues with latent pyromania....

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Of course if this topic has been initiated before,I may have to ride one of those flame rockets off of this board.

For now I'll just sit it out here in my slit-trench

Regards,
Fontenoy.

a "big gun", but with a very short "clip"....

I prefer amix of 105 and 155 mm howitzers, they can kill light vehicles, and do a lot of suppression during a lot of time.

IMO i use my artillery to rout the enemy infantry and then my armored platoons supported by infantry can mow'em down.

I like the 105s. They have some stopping power and provide plenty of suppression, with a nice number of shells. The 150s run out of ammo too soon and the 75s are basically useless IMHO.

For pinpoint accuracy, I like the 81mms. They are great for preparation in getting that stubborn engineer squad out of a large wooded area.

I like the Soviet 120mm mortars (and the German 120mm mortar which is a direct copy of them) for onboard arty. Every game I play using them, I seem to kill a vehicle or two with 'em... the US 60mm mortar is a very useful little toy also, great range and good accuracy for supressing enemy positions prior to assaulting them.

I'll second that vote on the Wurfrahmen. They are also excellent for infantry killing..... drive them up to about 5 hexes away from a mass of infantry, and start loosing off......
Also... we must not forget the Russian version... the Kataysha (spelling?)

There is ONLY 1 good arty!!!!!

MORE arty hehehe.:)

Well actually I like to use 150s 203s or 8 inch. Things actually seem to get killed under that stuff (screw supression, I want the stuff dead).
I LIKE that my life bothers them,
Why should I be the only one bothered by it eh.

I love the russian 203mms.... They just chew everything to pieces as long as they don't run out of ammunition... :D

Anybodies' 105 mm..It's more "bang for the buck".(Same reason all the powers went to it after WW1....)..The 75 is just weaker than circus lemonade..Sure,i'd LIKE to have bigger "guns",but they don't have a ROF to speak of and they run out too soon..

m10bob...

If I'm SO or US, I always take some 203mm or 8" Howitzers, which put down about 8-10 shells that supress two hexes around them, and kills in adjacent hexes.

105mm have their uses for mass supression and probing fire, but if I find a mass of enemy units, I ALWAYS lay on the heavy fire. :)
If you can read this, you're at the end of my post.

I'll have to throw my hat in with the 120mm's, and when playing as the allies I go with the US/UK 4.2in mortars. I had one bizarre PBEM where my UK 4.2inchers destroyed 7-8 of my opponents tanks (mostly Panthers) while firing indirectly.

And one thing I noticed about the US 60mm jeep mounted mortar: it has smoke ammo...AFAIK its the only squad sized mortar in SPWAW that does.

on-board us 4.5" rockets and/or Brit Land Matress fired from about 20-35 hexes distance.

Having 32 rounds land in a ~ 6 x 6 hex area puts a world of hurt on any units in or 1 hex adjacent to the drop pattern.

Fun topic. My favorites are mortars. I like battles that include infantry and infantry tactics, and mortars are perfect here. I always try to get some medium mortars - they are accurate enough that you can walk them in front of your infantry as they advance into a wooded or built up area, suppressing the enemy infantry before you run into them. The response times are low - you can usually bring them on target pretty quickly - and the ROF's are high. They pack a lot of supression - that's what counts to me, I don't depend on my arty to cause massive casualties. The US 60 mm mortar is great because of the range - the light mortars from the other combatants are a little too small to do much most of the time. I also like onboard heavy mortars - they are accurate and they pack a wallop. The big guns are nice if you know where the enemy is and you want to soften them up before you get there (or they get to you), but they are pretty useless once the range closes.
