Their placemats are maps of South East Asia, explaining where the different dishes and foods come from. As invigorating as the dinner conversation was, I was staring at my placemat and daydreaming about POW/Repulse, Palembang and the DEI.

I live in the Pacific NW, and when I was all gangbusters on Silent Hunter 4, I was setting up shots on merchant ships. Haven't been to the port in a while, but I'm sure the same will happen to me as to you.

A commuter train line passes the port and I took that line today.  I didn't see anybody working so I figured there wasn't enough support.

My office is in Brooklyn and one side overlooks New York Harbor, and the other side the Brooklyn Navy Yard. As a Child I remember taking the train over a bridge, near the Navy yard, where an aircraft carrier remained mothballed. I remembered it did not have a agled flight deck. One of the Essex's perhaps?

hmm a quick wiki revealed nothing about a mothballed carrier at the BNY, I wonder which one?

I can see the USS Cod (GATO class WWII sub) anchored in the inner harbor of Cleveland.

My office is in Brooklyn and one side overlooks New York Harbor, and the other side the Brooklyn Navy Yard. As a Child I remember taking the train over a bridge, near the Navy yard, where an aircraft carrier remained mothballed. I remembered it did not have a agled flight deck. One of the Essex's perhaps?

The question begged, is how old are you , and how old a child were you when you saw it? In other words, if you can come up with a year, we can probably figure it out. It couldn't have been Intrepid, as she has had an angled deck since the early 50's.

Abandon all hope, ye that enter...

My own version of this is an inflatable globe that my daughter was given by her grandparents. It has some pretty nice detail, but stays up at Grandma and Grandpas as a rule.

When conversation is slow, I find myself picking up the globe, calculating transport distances from CONUS to Australia / New Zealand.

I just drove by down I-680 near Benecia.  About 30-40 old ships from the National Defense Reserve Fleet and an Iowa class BB {I forget which one, I think it is New Jersey}. 
 
I was wondering when they would be released.

I was recently helping my daughter with a part of a Geography lesson. Once I picked up her book and started staring at the maps of the Pacific Ocean I got lost in a bit of daydreaming about where I was going to invade next after I took Rabaul. I only snapped out of it once I heard the inevitble " Dad......" [8|]

This was about 40 to 45 years ago. I might have the angled deck wrong. If you are very familiar with NYC my view would be from the the J train crossing the Williamsburg bridge. I saw this many, many times as my father would allow me to stand on the seat to see out the window. I would wait the whole trip from Queens to see this (guess I had the bug early). They were not active because they would never move. Tied up next to a couple of other ships and long gone. Someone told me it was the Enterprise, but she left the year I was born. put the time range from 1965-1968. My dad used to take me to see things and because he said I would never see them again. I remember, the Singer building and the Worlds Fair (64-65?).
I had forgotten all about this until a few years ago. I was working in Providence Rhode Island and was driving north looking for a Portuguese restaurant someone had recommended. I was driving around lost, went over a bridge, and below me was the USS Massachusetts.

I had a similar reaction when I began to play chess many years ago: as I walked down the street, I would imagine things like a car doing a knight-like move and capturing a small truck, and a bus could do a Queen-like move down the street to checkmate a big truck along a perpendicular street.

It disappeared after a while when I got interested in sex...[:D]
