Essex Hull Names

I had one HR for my new opponent: No Joke names for the Essex CV's that you can rename in the reinforcment queue. Just a personal preference, but I don't want to face the "CV Margaritaville" in combat.

Which brings up a question in my mind.....what are some good Essex-class hull names, if you want to keep it serious? Seems like most are named after USN ships in the age of sail, or famous battles. I have a few ideas, what do you guys think?

SHIPS:
Constellation (was also the planned name of a Saratoga-class BC hull)
Argus (1812 brig)
Niagara (Perry's 2nd flagship at Lake Erie)
Eagle (20-gun brig at Battle of Lake Champlain)
Guerriere (built for us navy; named after british ship captured by old ironsides)
Congress (1812 frigate)

BATTLES:
San Juan Hill (my personal favorite; FDR would want this for uncle Teddy)
Shiloh
Pea Ridge
Gettysburg (good luck getting southern senators to go with that though)
Chapultepec (from the halls of montezuma....)
Chickamauga
Chancellorsville

If not already used, how about Philadelphia? She was one of the gunboats that battled the British fleet at the Battle of Valcour Island. I think part of the Philadelphia is displayed at the Smithsonian.

Well there is already a Brooklyn class cruiser named Philadelphia. Have it sunk first and it should be ok. She actually can sink, she's not the Boise, but she's not on the right theatre [;)]

Well in fact, in previous instalment of the game, a sunk early US CV or CA would respawn a certain given time later as a Essex/Baltimore class with the same name. Unfortunately, this "respawn" system was totally out of line: IRL, ships were not laid up everytime a US CV or CA would get sunk. Yorktown II, Hornet II, Wasp II, Lexington II, etc... were all in building process for some of them way before their namesake got sunk; they just had their original name changed in the middle of their assembly process to pay homage to their fallen elders. This meant that the previous rule would deprive the US player from historical assets if he didn't lose his original CVs, as the new ship would have historically come online anyway. Thus, in AE the ships which bear this kind of name may be renamed while in construction queue to take into account the fact that in your game Yorktown may still be afloat while Enterprise got nailed - this allows for much more flexibility indeed in the naming process, but shall be done only once from what I heard. Works for any ship with a I, II, III kind of appendice.

CV-12 Hornet was originally named Kearsarge, and CV-18 Wasp was originally named Oriskany. Both names were eventually given to post war Essex class carriers.

CV-10 Yorktown and CV-16 Lexington were originally named Bon Homme Richard and Cabot, respectively. Those names were used for WW II carriers.

Other names that were assigned to Essex class carriers but not used during the war include Reprisal, Crown Point, and Valley Forge. Also, four post war Essex class carriers were named after WW II battles: Leyte, Tarawa, Iwo Jima, and Philippine Sea. If you have some decisive battles in your own game, you might want to consider using those for names.

A bit of trivia: Teddy Roosevelt was not FDR's uncle; he was a fairly distant cousin, and they weren't very close personally. But he was Eleanor Roosevelt's uncle.

Howdy CR......only problem there was a Brooklyn-class cruiser Philadelphia that served in the Med. Good thinking though.

If you recall, the ship used to burn her on that mission was USS Intrepid.....

Just as Bunker Hill was actually Breed's Hill, the Rough Riders did not charge up San Juan Hill, but Kettle Hill.

The Rough Riders took Kettle Hill on the American right with assistance from several troops of the "black" 10th Cavalry and the entire 3rd Cavalry ("white" volunteers). Most of the 10th supported by elements of the 24th & 25th colored infantry on the left took San Juan Hill.

If you called it "Santiago", it could incorporate the land battle AND the defeat of the Spanish Naval Squadron that attempted to run the blockade.

I like using the names of the old frigates.  Constellation, Congress, etc.  I'd like Constitution but I don't think she was ever decommissioned.  Philadelphia would be a great name but it is taken.

Only one I've settled on so far is Bull Run but Constitution and Constellation will more than likely make the cut if I need them.
