The good thing is that the forts didn't get lowered and the offensive was repulsed.

That was good to see. As said switching leaders and giving proper rest can help out quite a bit.
I do not have any airpower in the area but I have been softening his troops with the big gun bombardments which has been somewhat effective.

So Manila lives to see another day. You can only wonder how much harder it would have been without the bug at Clark Field which caused me 25 000 supply points and around 800av points.
