Do forage rolls have to come at the end of phase?

Empires in Arms is the computer version of Australian Design Group classic board game. Empires in Arms is a seven player game of grand strategy set during the Napoleonic period of 1805-1815. The unit scale is corps level with full diplomatic options

Do forage rolls have to come at the end of phase?

Post by larrywrose »

What if instead of the current system for forage rolls, it was done at the beginning of the next phase? This would require some kind of designating "First coprs in" second corps ect. Most of the forage rolls are set up during non combat moves anyway. I realize that we do like to know what the forage rolls are, but I could wait till the next phase for the results. Just some kind of system that let you know exactly what the die mods were going to be and letting you select the order of arrival. With this in place we could then go to a stack move for land units also.

Thanks

Someone may decide to forage or not forage a corps based upon the results of another corps' forage result. One bad roll for one corps might cause a key corps to no longer be practical for a battle.

Jimmer is on here.
With the current on-demand forage, you could avoid a possible mass starvation.
Stack movement in land just simply will not happen. It messes with foraging, insurrection units, depot eating, etc.

I agree on both counts. I thought once that land stack movement would be ok but it would really just had unneeded UI bulkiness to the game (since you would then have to declare which corps got there first, etc, etc for foraging rolls as Marshall as already mentioned) and that bulkiness and extra decisions would counteract (and probably subtract from) any benefit obtained from land stack movement.

I would favor corps not to "automatic" use movepoints at the end of move if within reach of supply, unless specific doing so with the "forage-buttom". Yes its slows game down, but we talking minutes.

Remember you can always check your current supply cost, before you end your move, and ïf you think to high, find the heavy -cost- supply corps, and perform your own forage.

While I agree that it would be nice to make a decision on what happed to a forage roll, you decide to take the chance on the roll. Right now there is a counter letting you know how many times someone reloaded the game. But that really doesn't mean anything. I reloaded a move 10 times becuase I was interruppted and then changed my mind trying to tweak exactly where I wanted everyone. I only had 2 forage rolls for 1-5 and I really didn't care since each corps had militia. What I did care about was getting set up for a DOW next turn and having my forces just correct. The program undo button does not work very well when moving garrisons around. So reloading is sometimes mandatory.

In the boardgame I would almost always move all my forces, and then we would do all the forage rolls at the end of the turn. I really don't see sending a corps out to do a job, and then becuase you lost 4 factors, sending out another one to cover. What I do see is that when I reload the game 10 times on my next tweaking of the turn and I actually have a large amount of forage rolls I might have to run it again to make sure I take losses so people don't think I am cheating. The problem with the forage rolls now is if you get lucky when you finally decide where everyone is going, it looks bad.

Forage rolls delayed to the beginning of the next phase just means you have to plan better. That is in my opinion a good thing. If your battle plan relies on you making a forage roll, you really need a better battle plan.

Check the "Tech Support" thread on this. This is the argument I was making though some seemed to have a problem with it.

I was thinking about this over the weekend. Technically, in EiA each corps had to forage immediately after finishing its move. So, the option of waiting until the end of the turn wouldn't even apply there.

Personally, I'm OK with having forage occur "at any point", as it is now. This is the way humans always did it anyhow. It's a change from EiA, but a good one (IMO). Certainly speeds things up, and with the map being so much harder to view, it's almost required.

I would really like a small addition to the corps listing screen:
When showing a corps as on "Normal Supply" add the supply cost of that corps, like this "Normal Supply 2$".

Would make it so much easier to find that corps you forgot to do forage for.

 - And would make supply cost much more transparent.

Also adding Larry's suggestion from another post to indicate which supply depots are part of an valid supply chain would help.

and where those depots are located - that would be huge IMO.

Actually, I think that depots that are not in a valid supply chain are outlined in yellow, no?
