Map Gurus Advice

Post by Dili »

Here is the preliminary work for a Mediterranean Map.

I first measured distances (the black lines between planes) and then copy pasted a partial map image from Google and scaled to fit only between two measured places. Then another between two measured places and again etc. That way i can have scaled map to the distances. Not perfect but close enough.

Then the question was the orientation. I defined the most important is to have North African distances correct and as such to have the distance between Tripoli and Alexandria horizontal and with correct number of hexes but that implied that Italy would be too leaning so i found this to not be a bad compromise.

The question is am i missing something to consider? Or any other critic? Note that image is just the pastiche to define the coastline, it as nothing to do with final map graphic.

Not a scale issue, but I would try to keep Italy at an about 120° degree angle so to speak, so that ship movement along the Adriatic coasts and Tyrrhenian coast more or less "merge" well with the limits of hex-based movement - your study above seems to already fit quite well this approach

The only place where this approach wouldn't work would be Tunisia, where a more or less straight south-north advance would be distorted by hex movement.
Also possibly moving ships from Taranto to the Benghazi area, or planes' range from southern sicily to Malta
